Laban Edward Berry
APRIL 22, 1940 ~ FEBRUARY 24, 2019 (AGE 78)

LABAN EDWARD “Ed” BERRY, JR, of Bryan, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 24, 2019. He was 78 years old. Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Teal Berry of Bryan. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rushie Berry Simpson and David Simpson of Ft. Worth, along with his three sons and their families: Craig and Karen Berry of McKinney, TX; Kyle and Melissa Berry of Ennis, TX; and Kendall and Melissa Berry of Houston, TX, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, L. Ed Berry, Sr., and Udis White Berry of Waco, as well as a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Berry. His family will dearly miss him but rejoices in the fact that he is with Jesus and that they will one day reunite with him in Glory.

Ed was born and raised in Waco, TX. Upon graduation from Waco High School, he attended Texas A&M where he was in the Corps of Cadets. Ed was in the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 1962. He was a second generation Aggie, as his father was Class of 1929. He boasted of four generations of Aggies in the family, as all of his sons and daughters-in-law as well as two granddaughters and a grandson to date are Aggies. While at A&M, he was a member of Squadron 4 “Four Aces,” and he was the Commanding Officer of Squadron 8 “Animal Eight”. He also proudly served as a Ross Volunteer. As a student, he received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics. He was also in the first class in the world to graduate with a Masters degree in Computer Science.

On August 31, 1963, he married the love of his life, Barbara Teal. They were married at South Main Baptist Church in Houston. They raised their three boys in Houston, moving to the Dallas area in 1983. While in Houston and Dallas, his highlights included coaching all three boys for years in basketball and baseball – from when Craig was 6 until Kendall was 12 – a span of 13 years! In addition, he served at South Main Baptist and Tallowood Baptist in Houston, Prestonwood Baptist in Dallas, and Travis Avenue Baptist in Fort Worth as a Deacon, choir member, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study leader and many other committee memberships and volunteer positions, including a period as the Chairman of the Deacons at Prestonwood and President of the Choir.

After graduation from A&M, he went to work at NASA for IBM and worked on Gemini and Apollo missions. He then spent the next 25 years as the information systems leader for several corporations, including Sysco Foods, Zapata Corporation, and Texas Oil & Gas. Following these years in industry, he transitioned to technology and management consulting for Oracle Corporation and Cambridge Energy Research Associates. For the last 15 years, he worked in the world of real estate, as a Realtor®. Ten of those years he spent as the Executive Director of the Bryan-College Station Association of Realtors, which he transformed into one of the top three Realtor Associations in the state of Texas.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Steven Tseng, the many doctors and nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan and St. Joseph’s Hospital of Grimes County in Navasota, Penny Carmody from Merryman Home Health, and Brazos Valley Hospice for their excellent care and attentiveness to him. They made such a truly positive difference in his life and his family’s lives during the last few months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or another charity of your choice.

To Celebrate Ed’s Life, a visitation will be held from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Hillier Funeral Home of BRYAN. The Celebration will continue at 2 PM on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Bryan with a Celebration Service followed by a reception.
