AL'S STORY
Al Maenche was born November 8, 1944 in Lebanon, PA. Since his father was in the military he moved occasionally and spent time in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Alaska.

During his high school years Al ended up in Rantoul IL and attended Rantoul Township High School (RTHS). He was active in chorus and participated in theater productions. RTHS is also where he met his future bride, Darleen.

After attending the University of Illinois briefly Al transferred to Texas A&M where he completed a Bachelors degree in Mathematics. He would later return and complete a Masters in Education. He remained an Aggie fan all his life.

In 1967 Al married Darleen at First Baptist Church in Rantoul and returned to his alma mater to teach. He served as the Math Department Chairman at RTHS for many years. He created the first computer course at the school. During his years as a teacher he also was a Student Council sponsor and voice of the Eagle Band.

During their 51 years together, Al and Darleen enjoyed spending time traveling much of the United States. As school teachers they would take adventures in the summers to “stuff their children’s heads full of facts”. At least, that was what their two sons, Mark and Andrew, accused them of doing.

After moving to Florida upon retirement from RTHS in 2000 Al continued teaching and tutoring many students. His love of teaching math motivated him to continue to share his passion with others. He was always willing to engage his grandchildren in math lessons. He also never gave up his love for computers and was an avid Apple fan.

Al loved music and was the choir director at First Baptist Church of Rantoul for 23 years. He continued singing in choir in Florida as well. One of his proudest moments was when he sang with a choir in Carnegie Hall in November of 2017.

Al passed away on October 23rd, 2018 in Palm Coast, Florida. He is survived by his wife Darleen; his two sons – Mark (Michelle) of Summerville, SC and Andrew (Heather) of McKinney, TX; his sister Patricia (Carl) Barrett of Sauk City, WI; and seven grandchildren.
