Alfred Nels Pryal, 77, formerly of Gastonia, NC, and Chapel Hill, NC, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at the Potomac Valley Nursing Home in Rockville, Maryland.

Al’s beloved wife, Mary Frances Schmeltekopf Pryal, predeceased him in 2010 after 46 years of marriage. Al is survived by his three children and six grandchildren: Mark Pryal and wife, Heidi, of Silver Spring, MD; Alison Dickey and husband, Jonathan, of Bethesda, MD, and their children Sarah, Joshua, Caroline, and Lauren; and Michael Pryal and wife, Katie, of Chapel Hill, NC, and their sons Adrian and Edward.

Al was born on November 15, 1941, in California where he lived with his parents and three siblings in Menlo Park. Al was an athlete who excelled in baseball, golf and marksmanship. He served as a flight navigator in the United States Air Force in the late 1960s. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Al was a computer programmer whose talents ranged from the early days of mainframe computing to modern data warehousing. He enjoyed bass fishing with his son Mark, wood-crafting with Michael, and cheering for the UNC basketball Tar Heels.

A memorial service will be offered at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 8, in the chapel at The National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC.
