Joseph C. Virgilio
APRIL 2, 1929 – FEBRUARY 18, 2019

Joseph C. Virgilio went home to be with the Lord on February 18, 2019. All week Joe had been saying goodbye to people telling them “the angels had come to visit him and were taking him home to see God, soon.” The family is exceedingly grateful that Joe understood where he was going because he knew Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Joe lived a life of promise which began when he joined the USMC right after high school. As an exception to his service, he finished second place in a National USMC Marksmanship Tournament. Very soon thereafter he decided that college was what he needed to be commissioned in the U.S. Army. So, Dad headed to Texas A&M University to study science. Dad met and married his sweetheart Elizabeth Earle Coon while attending college. Shortly after graduating from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, he began his Army career at Ft. Hood as an Armor Officer /Tank Commander. Joe was a man of great wisdom who was always available to help and counsel those in need. All through life Joe was highly esteemed & well appreciated by business colleagues and friends alike. After a tour of active duty, Joe entered the Army reserves and finished his career as a Lt. Colonel.

Joe’s passion for the word of God and languages fueled his talents, and up until the end he could recite Psalms 23 in French. He worked for the Gulf Oil Company during their merger with Chevron Oil Company and remained there for 35 years. Joe’s capacity for learning new things earned him a Master’s degree in History, and he went on to work as an American History professor in the Lamar University System for 14 additional years. He was an active community supporter and served on the board of directors for the Red Cross, and was an active member of the Lions’ Club for years. Joe loved Art and Art History and was an accomplished, sought-after artist who had several showings throughout his lifetime. After retiring he could be found painting while listening to Pavoratti, Vivaldi, and Andrea Bocelli, in whose compositions he recently developed an interest.

Today we salute this great man who was a faithful friend to many, a loving father and husband, an outstanding artist for his works, a devout Bible Study Teacher, and a Professor at Lamar University, who spoke French and German.

Joe is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty; his eldest son, Daryl J. Virgilio, and wife Donna; son, Robert Lynn Virgilio; grandchildren, Clint Virgilio and wife Avery, Christina Virgilio, Blake and Nicole Virgilio, and Michael Virgilio; and great grandchildren, Caden, Hudson and Brooke Virgilio. Everyone will miss him very much.

The Virgilio Family would like to thank the multitude of friends who have run the distance with us as we helped “Daddy Virgilio” finish his race with excellence. Many thanks to his bible study class at First Baptist Church, their family and friends, and The Second Baptist Church of Houston Leadership and Prayer Teams, who have faithfully visited and supported our family.

Thank you Lord for receiving him so peacefully into Heaven today, where he begins his new life with you. Please pray for his wife, Betty, and the entire Virgilio Family as we walk through this season of Life.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 22, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home. A celebration of Joe’s life will take place in Forest Park’s chapel on Saturday, February 23, at 2:00 p.m. with a committal service and reception immediately following.
