Thomas Reece Vannoy
August 23, 1922 - January 05, 2019

Thomas Reece Vannoy, age 96, of Temple died January 5, 2019 in a local hospital. A memorial will be held at 11 a.m.., on Wednesday, January 16, at Grace Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Thomas Lamb officiating.

Mr. Vannoy was born August 23, 1922 in Robstown, Texas to Allen Frances and Kaleta Lyon Vannoy. He grew up in McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley and entered Texas A&M University in 1939, in the class of 1943. His education was interrupted by World War II, and he served in the Army in the role of a cryptographer to secure communications with the Allies in the Pacific theater. After graduating in 1946, he began a long career in the petroleum products industry.

He married Eloise Smith in Brookhaven, Mississippi on June 13, 1948 and his career took them to many locations including Seagraves and Conroe, TX; Burlington Ontario, Canada; Eldorado, AR and Monroe, LA, retiring in 1986 from Columbian Carbon, later acquired by Freeport-McMoRan. His pastimes included golf, travel particularly overseas, and photography. As he became more homebound, his lifetime hobby of crossword puzzles continued as a daily activity.

He moved to Temple in 1986 and was a long-time member of the Rotary Club. Tom served as President of the club in Conroe, TX. In Temple, he also was an active member and elder of Grace Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister, Marjorie Vannoy Mueck, and his parents. Survivors include Tamara Vannoy, her husband Chris Tjepkema of Austin, and Cheryl and Mike Mahoney of McKinney; three grandchildren, Darren Tjepkema, Thomas Mahoney, and Meredith Cody; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is sister, Frances Vannoy Metcalf of San Antonio, and nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the Grace Presbyterian Church.
