Judson W. Wood Jr.

Judson W. “Dub” Wood, Jr., of Argyle, TX, died peacefully on January 29, 2019. A loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Dub will be remembered for his quiet good humor, generosity, and integrity. He was unfailingly thoughtful, a giver of sage advice, and a man who supported his family unreservedly.

Dub was born on April 20, 1930, to Judson W. and Hazel Pafford Wood in Alice, TX, the eldest of five children. He grew up and attended school in Alice in south Texas, but he also fondly remembered long summer stays in his mother’s hometown of Claude in the Panhandle. He graduated in 1951 from Texas A&I in Kingsville with a BS in petroleum engineering; he later received an MS in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M in College Station. He began a successful career in the oil and gas business after finishing his degree, settling first in Houston, where he worked for J Ray McDermott & Co. While dedicated to his work, he also had a spirit of adventure and love of travel, and he took extended leaves in order to travel through South America and Asia. Once, he and friends shipped a station wagon to Europe and drove the car across several countries and enjoyed many adventures.

Dub began studies for a PhD in Economics at SMU in Dallas in 1960, but marriage and children shifted his attention back to a career in oil. He met Barbara Byers at McDermott in Houston and they married in 1961. They made their home in Dallas, where Dub joined H.J. Gruy and Associates, where he worked for 35 years, eventually becoming company President. Dub and Barbara soon welcomed the birth of their children David and Barbara, enjoying happy years in Dallas. After Barbara’s untimely death from cancer in 1975, Dub met Jane Roberts of Arlington, also recently widowed, and they began a new life together.

Dub and Jane started their marriage by flying on the Concorde to Paris for their honeymoon, and the adventure continued from there. They settled in Dallas, enjoying their work, travel, and seeing all of their children and, later, grandchildren grow and flourish. They loved entertaining their friends. Dub was a good and creative cook, and it made him happy to prepare meals for others. In retirement, Dub found great fulfillment in volunteering for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Dallas County and later Denton County, where he helped support children caught in the court system; he was voted “Rookie of the Year” in his first year of service in Dallas. Dub and Jane moved to Argyle in 2004 and built a home in the country; they enjoyed looking out at the fields, birds, and Dutch-banded cows. In his last years he enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved dogs.

Dub was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert, sister Martha Williams, and first wife Barbara Byers Wood. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Jane Roberts Wood; son David (Cathy Patterson) of Houston; daughter Barbara Wood Scott (George) of Colleyville; stepdaughters Melinda Roberts (Alan McMichael) of Princeton, NJ, and Susan Roberts Read (Reg) of Argyle; grandchildren Charlie Wood, Victoria, Clint, and Sarah Scott, Annabel and Tommy Roberts-McMichael, and Alex and Catherine Read; sister Joann Laney (Jim) of Arlington; brother Carl (Judy) of Leakey; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, February 3, at St Nicholas Episcopal Church, 4800 Wichita Trail, Flower Mound. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CASA.
