James Edward Gathings
Birth Date: May 15, 1922 Death Date: January 17, 2019

Mr. James Edward Gathings, age 96, passed away peacefully at 12:10 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2019, in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was born on May 15, 1922, in Cleburne, Texas to his loving parents Doug and Zela Gathings. His father was a Texas State Representative and his mother was a school teacher. James grew up in Arlington, Texas with his sisters Evelyn and Mary. He joined the Army Air Corp in September 1942 and served as a B24 instructor during WWII. James graduated from Texas A&M University in May 1949 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He had a long distinguished career in the aerospace industry primarily with Ling-Temco- Vought. While at LTV he worked on the Regulus Missile, the Scout Missile, and the Crusader aircraft to name a few. After retiring, James was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels delivering meals to the homebound, a math tutor for Euless Independent School District, a member of the Euless Historical Preservation Society, and a restorer for the Vought Heritage Society where he assisted in the restoration of the Corsair, the V-173 “Flying Pancake” and others. James was a 50+ year member of the Scottish Rite branch of the Freemasons where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a past Master of the Cleburne Lodge.

James is preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Campbell Gathings. He is survived by his loving wife and companion, Beth Hickfang Gathings; his three daughters Phyllis Butts, Carol Gathings, and Joyce Wickes; his two grandchildren J.W. Butts, and Mike Butts; as well as ?ve great-grandchildren. He will be sincerely missed by his loving family, his devoted friends and all the wonderful individuals who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Gathings on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Euless located at 106 N. Euless Main St, Euless, Texas 76040. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
