Charles Reese "Chuck" Cargill
Charles Reese "Chuck" Cargill passed away January 28, 2019, at the age of 87. He was born in 1931 to his loving parents, Maudie Caroline Cole and Willie Newton Cargill of Eddy, Texas. He attended Bruceville-Eddy schools and Waco High School. Chuck then entered The Agriculture and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) and graduated in May of 1953, with a degree in Business Administration and remained a proud member of the Class of '53 throughout his life.
While a boy in Eddy, Chuck was taught excellent work ethics by his parents as he worked alongside them picking cotton to help save for his college fund. He continued saving for college by delivering papers for the Waco Times Herald, working as a short-order cook in Waco, and working at service stations in Waco and Temple. In the summer following his high school graduation, Chuck received a third-year apprentice designation in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBOFEW) and worked on construction crews until he entered college.
As a student at Texas A&M, Chuck worked several jobs for the college, including banquet waiter, pin setter and then desk clerk in the bowling alley in the Memorial Student Center (MSC). At that time, there were no women at Texas A&M and being a corps member was mandatory. Chuck was a member of "B Air Force" which was later designated as "Squadron 3." His senior year, he was on the Third Group Staff with the rank of Cadet Major. Upon his graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force and continued to serve as a reservist for thirty-five more years, retiring as a Major General (2 stars, the highest rank awarded during peacetime).
Chuck's military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Upon his retirement from the Air Force Reserves, he received a letter that he treasured from Nancy and President Ronald Regan in appreciation of his many years of service to our Nation.
During his sophomore year at Texas A&M, Chuck met the love of his life, Mary "Lee" Hall, on a double blind date (She was with the other guy and he was with the other girl.) He phoned her the next morning asking for a date, which she gave him. They were "going steady” on their second date and engaged to be engaged on their third date. They married in 1952 at the beginning of his senior year and had 66 wonderful years together.
Upon graduation, Chuck accepted a position with Sears-Roebuck in Waco. He was called to active duty in March 1954 and was assigned as a Supply Officer at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama. After being released from active duty in 1956, Chuck returned to his job with Sears-Roebuck in Waco and was soon transferred to Sears in Bryan. After several years, Chuck had the opportunity to move from Sears to begin his life-long employment with Texas A&M University.
Chuck began his career at Texas A&M as a Tactical Officer in the Cadet Corps and subsequently held the following positions: Research Economist in the Industrial Economic Research Division of the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX); Manager of the Exchange Store (TAMU bookstore); Director of the University Center Complex (Memorial Student Center, Rudder Tower, Auditorium and Theatre Center); Director of Business Services (equivalent to the position of City Manager); Associate Vice President for Business Affairs; and Vice President for Operations for the entire university. He held this position until his retirement in 1987, when he was designated Vice President for Operations Emeritus. During his employment at TAMU, Chuck completed his Master of Business Degree by attending classes on his lunch hour. He did a lot of public speaking, primarily at Air Force Reserve gatherings, and gives credit to Toastmaster's International for preparing him for that role.
Chuck's parents were always very supportive of him in every way and assured him that in America he could grow up to be anything he aspired to be...even President. Lo and behold, his parents were right! During his tenure as Vice President of TAMU, he was designated "Acting President of Texas A&M University" for a three-day period during the absence of President Dr. Frank E. Vandiver.
His civic and fraternal affiliations include past member of the board of trustees, St. Joseph's Hospital; member of the First Baptist Church in Bryan; past member and past chairman, board of trustees, Bryan Hospital; past president and past member, board of directors, Briarcrest Country Club; past chairman, Texas A&M University United Way; past president, Bryan Chapter of Toastmasters International; Reserve Officers Association; treasurer, Aggieland Chapter of the Air Force Association; 32nd Degree Mason and past Master of his Lodge in Eddy, Texas; Shriner; and member of Texas A&M Association of Former Students and Twelfth Man Foundation.
Chuck was a life-long Southern Baptist Christian and was faithful to his church in attendance as long as his health permitted. He is now with his Heavenly Father and those in his family who preceded him in death...his parents, Maudie Caroline (Cole) and Willie Newton Cargill, a brother Stephen Lee "Bud" Cargill, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Vera Lee (Cook) Hall and Charles Allen Hall and brothers-in-law Bobby Joe Cargill and Charlie Boudreaux.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary "Lee" Hall Cargill, son David and wife Jenny, daughter Diana and husband Mark Bayliss, 4 grandchildren: Michael Cargill and wife Jenn, Kenneth Cargill and wife Amanda, Madison Bayliss Rhoads and husband Billy and James Bayliss and wife Karissa; 4 great-grandchildren: Kaylee Marie Cargill, Emily Ruth Cargill, Russell Lee Rhoads and Charles Brian Cargill. He is also survived by a brother, Willie Newton Cargill and wife Cheryl, sisters-in-law: Dianne Cargill, Barbara Hall Cargill, and Jonette Hall Boudreaux; brother-in-law Bob Hall and wife Judy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He treasured the love of his family and friends and we know he will be waiting at "Heaven's Door" to greet us. Well done, my good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the Glory of God. Matthew 25:21
Only God knows when we will leave this world and He was ready to welcome another good man to Heaven. Special thanks go to Dr. David Hackethorn, Dr. Juddi Yeh, Dr. Thomas Meade, and Leddie Grall and the staff at Hospice Brazos Valley for their excellent care and concern for Chuck and his quality of life. Additional thanks go to all of his wonderful family and friends, the staff and members of First Baptist Church of Bryan, and so many others whose prayers have surrounded Chuck and his family with love and caring as he bravely battled cancer this past year. Your prayers were a great comfort to him and our family and we felt the love you shared with all of us.

To honor Chuck's life, a visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1st, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas. His funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on February 2nd at the First Baptist Church of Bryan, Texas.
