James C. Allums Jr.
MAY 31, 1933 – DECEMBER 28, 2018

Allums, James Clyde Jr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on December 28, 2018. A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Cox Chapel on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Walt Marcum.

Born to Ada Keoun Allums and James Clyde Allums on May 31, 1933 in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, “Jimmy,” as he was known by all until the age of 18, was the only child, a cherished and unexpected blessing for his parents. He graduated from Plain Dealing High School in 1951 and went on to attend Texas A&M University, Class of 1955, a proud member of the Corps of Cadets. It was at Texas A&M that he reinvented himself as “Jim.” He served in the Army, before moving to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University where he completed a law degree in 1958. As a practicing civil litigator for more than 40 years, Jim was well respected among his peers. He served as mediator following retirement from active practice.

Jim married his sweetheart of 62 years, Maryann Chiles Allums, on May 26, 1956, in Dallas. Together, they made their home in Dallas and led a rich life filled with family and friends. Jim’s passions and hobbies included bird hunting (and bird dogs), golf, Tex-Mex, reading, and all things Fightin’ Texas Aggies. He hated vegetables, demanding a “no greens” meal on his birthday every year. Despite a less than ideal diet, he was a longtime active member of the Downtown YMCA, where he was a member of “The Running Group” and assisted with the Turkey Trot for more than four decades. Upon retirement, he filled his time as a community volunteer at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and assisting Maryann with her Meals on Wheels route. Jim’s faith was strong and unwavering. He was a long-standing member of Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Maryann, of Dallas, TX, son Richard Allums and wife, Audrey, of Helena, MT, son John Allums and wife, Michelle, of Dallas, TX, and two granddaughters, Abigail Allums Kauffman and husband, Cade, of Dallas, TX, and Elisabeth Allums of New York, NY. He is also survived by a loving extended family and innumerable friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CitySquare, 4000 East Side Ave Dallas, Texas 75226, or a charity of your choice.
