Obituary for Ret. Col John Thomas Massingale, Jr.
Colonel John Thomas Massingale Jr, 74, a resident of Carrollton, TX and formerly of Sherman, TX, died September 5, 2011 at Autumn Leaves Assisted Living in Flower Mound, TX. He was born May 24, 1937 in Sherman, TX. He was the son of John T. Massingale Sr and Hazel Juanita Massingale. He was a 1955 graduate of Sherman High School and a 1959 graduate of Texas A & M University. He earned a master's degree in management from Webster College, St. Louis, MO in 1975. He attended Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, Air War College at Maxwell AFB, AL, and Advanced Management Programs at Duke University, Durham, NC.
In 1959, Colonel Massingale entered pilot training school and received his wings in December 1960. He was assigned to Charleston AFB, SC, and served as an Aircraft Commander Standardization pilot in both the C-124 and C-141. After duties as Wing Operations Staff Officer for Plans, he was assigned duty with the 834th Airlift Division, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam until December 1971 when he transferred to the 7th Air Force as a Staff Officer.
After returning to the United States in April 1972, he was assigned to Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott AFB, IL as a member of the Operations Staff. In January 1973 he assumed the duty of Executive officer, Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Headquarters Military Airlift Command.
In January 1976, he was assigned to Norton AFB, CA, as Commander, 14th Military Airlift Squadron, and then Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, 63rd Military Airlift Wing. He assumed duties as Assistant Chief of Staff, Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott AFB, IL, in May 1979.
In 1980, Colonel Massingale was assigned to Pentagon Headquarters USAF as Chief Mobility Division, and then in 1981 assumed the duties as Chief, Program Exercises Division, and Assistant Deputy Director Resources, Deputy Chief of Staff for Program and Resources. In 1982 he assumed duties at Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott AFB, IL, as Wing Commander. Finally, in 1985 he was assigned to Maxwell AFB, AL, as CEO and Commander of the Civil Air Patrol.
Colonel Massingale retired from the USAF after 30 years of honorable service on October 31, 1989. He ended his military career with more than 9000 flying hours. He was awarded the Legion of Merit with 1 oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 5 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Combat Readiness Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with 8 service stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 6 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After retiring from the military in 1989, Colonel Massingale's love of flying found him employed as a Flight Simulator Instructor by American Airlines in Dallas, TX. He retired in 2002. He was an avid sports fan with a passion for the Dallas Cowboys and any sport his grandson played. He had a love of dogs, leaving behind little Maggie.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Robin Bell Massingale, and his wife of 50 years, Faye Lorena Massingale.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John Michael and Laura Jean Massingale of Lewisville, TX; his grandson, 'the little partner', Brett Ryan Massingale of Lewisville, TX; his sister Mary Hayton of Duncanville, TX; his sister-in-law, Polly White Biggs of Peoria, MS and many dear nieces and nephews.
The family has requested a graveside service be held Sunday, September 11th at 3:00PM at Robison cemetery with Rev. Benji Pyeatt officiating. He will receive full military graveside rites provided by the USAF.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made in Colonel John T. Massingale Jr's name to Ardent Hospice of Flower Mound, TX to show appreciation for the compassionate care they gave him the last few months of his life.
