Mike Montz, 77, beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend, of Friendswood, Texas, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Saturday afternoon, December 29, 2018, surrounded by his family. A native Houstonian, Mike was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital on December 11, 1941, to Vivian and Allie Montz in Houston, Texas.He was the youngest of two children.Mike recently celebrated his 54-year wedding anniversary to his loving wife Dorothy Mikulencak Montz.

Following graduation from St. Thomas Catholic High School in Houston in 1960, Mike attended the University of Houston, and met and married his wife Dorothy in 1964. Mike graduated from U of H in 1966 with a BS in Education and then attended Texas A&M University graduating in 1967 with a Master’s in Industrial Education.Mike and Dorothy were blessed with three children, Teresa, David, and Daniel. Mike began his career in Houston and soon continued with teaching at Clear Creek High School, Temple Junior College, and then worked as a training specialist with Stran Steel and Bechtel.For the last 23 years of his career, he was a well-respected and student-loved high school teacher at J. Frank Dobie High School in Pasadena ISD where he taught drafting, mechanical computerized drawing, woodshop and driver’s education.

Mike was an accomplished draftsman and designed and constructed many homes, buildings, and remodeling projects during his life, including his own home. After his retirement, Mike enjoyed home projects and community involvement and service. He served 38 years as Chairman of the Coward’s Creek Subdivision Architectural Control Committee; was a member of the Friendswood Economic Development Committee and served his local parish Mary Queen Catholic Church in many ways including designing the Tribute Wall and various projects for the Knights of Columbus and serving as a member of the Serra Club.

Mike cherished time with family and friends, and helping others with various projects. Always the teacher and giver, Mike was loved by many for his humor, his offering of advice, and his constant doing for others. He loved spending time with his family and even authored The Montz Book in 1978, which provided an in-depth genealogy and stories of the Montz family name origin.

Mike is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his three children; daughter Teresa Benden and husband, Mark, of College Station; son David Montz and wife, Kim, of Friendswood; son Daniel Montz and wife, Angela, of Beaverton, Oregon; his nine grandchildren, Travis Benden and wife, Kenzie; Justin Benden and wife, Rachael; Luke Benden, Joshua Montz, Hannah Montz, Samantha Montz, Zachary Montz, Alexandra Montz, and Bryce Montz; and great grandchildren Colt and Brantley Benden; Elise and Delilah Benden; his sister Barbara Eylers of Hyde Park, New York; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents Allie and Vivian Montz.

A celebration of Mike’s life and Catholic Mass will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 10:30 am at Mary Queen Catholic Church, in Friendswood, Texas. A reception and lunch will follow the service in the church hall and all are welcome to join the family to reminisce and celebrate his life.Honorary pallbearers will be his six grandsons.
