Jill Joiner Roberts

June 27, 1958 – December 29, 2018

Surrounded by the tender love of her family, Jill Joiner Roberts of Sherman, TX passed peacefully to Heaven on December 29, 2018. Jill fought metastatic breast cancer for 12 years despite little encouragement at the onset. She was an extraordinary person and touched many lives deeply through her passionate faith and genuine love for others.

Jill was born in Dallas, TX on June 27, 1958 to Harriet Hopkins Joiner and Joseph Malone Joiner, the fourth of five children. As an infant her family moved back to the family’s hometown of Sherman, TX where Jill was a fifth-generation Shermanite. Jill graduated from Sherman High School in 1976 and obtained a degree in Sociology from Texas A&M University in 1980. She was a proud Aggie and loved that her daughter, Rebekah, went on to attend and graduate from Texas A&M as well.

After graduating from Texas A&M Jill returned to Sherman and reconnected with an old high school friend, Joe Roberts, who quickly became the love of her life and future husband. The two were married less than a year later, on May 30, 1981 and began a journey of multiple moves from Sherman to the Metroplex, to El Paso, back to Sherman, and even to Omaha, NE before returning to Sherman where they have resided for the last 19 years.

Jill had a heart for being active in and serving the community. At the age of 11, she began her days of serving at the Easter Seal Society during her summers off from school. Jill went on to serve as a Brownie leader, Bible teacher, school volunteer and PTA member for her daughter’s school. She served on multiple boards and committees- Girl’s Inc Sherman, Juvenile Alternatives, Wilson N. Jones Community Relations Committee, Young Life, WOVI (Women of Visionary Impact), and Newcomers (in both Omaha, NE and Sherman, TX). Jill was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist church of Sherman and was active in many FUMC ministries including the Wednesday night women’s Bible study group where she provided praise and worship music each week for the group to sing.

Jill’s commitment to service was also evident in her career path which led her to work for many non-profit entities. These included the Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girl Scouts, MHMR-Collin County, The American Red Cross in Omaha, NE, and most recently Austin College. During her 15 years of service at Austin College, Jill worked in the department of Institutional Advancement, where she strengthened community relationships and helped to steward the interest and financial resources given to the college.

In the fall of 2006, Jill was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. After refusing to accept the initial timeline of doctors telling her she had less than 5 years to live, Jill became an inspiration for others at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, including her world-renowned doctor who described Jill as a “miracle” and became her biggest advocate. Jill’s very survival encouraged many others who had been given no hope to dig in and fight; seeking the best medical treatment, taking the best care of their bodies as possible and, most importantly, digging deep into their relationship with God for true Hope.

Jill is survived by her husband Joe Roberts of Sherman, daughter Rebekah Roberts Hess of Sherman, son-in-law Matthew Hess, four siblings: Jennie Carrell (Steve) of Austin, Julie Moon (Dana) of Longview, Joe Joiner (Jacque) of Sherman, Jayne Grimes (Don) of Dallas and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends. Jill was preceded in death by her parents Harriet Hopkins Joiner and Joseph Malone Joiner.

A celebration of Jill’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 401 N Elm St., Sherman, TX. The Reverend Chris Dowd will officiate. After the service, a reception will be held in Binkley Hall. A private burial service will follow the reception.

The family will welcome friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019 at Dannel Funeral Home, 302 S Walnut St., Sherman, TX.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Buckner International in Jill’s Memory.

Words cannot adequately express the depth to which Jill will be missed. In the words of her sister Jennie, “few people on the planet have as many people who cherish and respect them as did Jill. The only thing bigger than the Jill-sized hole she leaves behind is the huge legacy of love, commitment, encouragement, and wisdom she has poured into the lives of others."
