Robert Haines Havard
November 21, 1931 - January 2, 2019
Robert Haines Havard (87) died from complications of heart disease on January 2, 2019. His memorial service will be at 2:00 pm on January 5, 2019 at Parkview Baptist Church, 1001 Forsythe Ave., Monroe, Louisiana.
Pastors Rev. Charles Dupree and Lanny Turner will conduct the service.
Robert was born in Lufkin, Texas on November 21, 1931 to Mary Irene Barge Havard and L. J. Havard. His childhood was spent in the Lufkin area, specifically Zavalla, Texas.
He graduated high school at Port Neches, Texas and was accepted into Texas A & M University. He met Nadine Taylor at a Youth Social when he was a freshman. They were married December 20, 1951 in Bryan, Texas at Central Baptist Church.
He graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1953 and accepted a job with Columbian Carbon Company in Conroe Texas, knowing that he would be called into active duty for service in the Korean War.
In June 1954, he was called to active duty – commissioned as Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He served at Wright Patterson Air Force Base at Dayton, Ohio in the Air Technical Intelligence Unit.
After the war, he returned to work at Columbian Carbon Company in Conroe, TX. In 1956 he was transferred to the plant in Bunkie, La. For the next 8 years he transferred many times between Bunkie, Franklin, and Conroe TX. Plants.
In 1964 he was offered a position in the Corporate Office in Monroe, La as Superintendent of Process Engineering. His job involved traveling for plant start-ups in many locations – Germany, Brazil, Italy as well as routinely working with plants in Kansas, California, Texas, Arkansas. He received two patents for carbon black processes. He retired in 1986 after 30 years of work.
He then worked part-time at La. Tech with students making energy audits at various plants. He enjoyed seeing these plants in operation and enjoyed working with the engineering students.
He loved all machinery and later computer technology. The family joked that he read instruction manuals “for fun”.
A dedicated follower of Christ, he served as deacon at multiple Baptist churches. He and his wife, Nadine, worked for many years with Northeast College students. Bible study groups, Sunday School, socials – particularly enjoyed taking them on the river and teaching many of them to water-ski.
For 67 years, Nadine and Robert shared many adventures together. Tent camping, car trips, boating, waterskiing, snow skiing, mountain overnight backpacking trips, and couples volley ball every Friday night.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nadine Taylor Havard, son, Robert Paul Havard, daughter, Karen Havard Lamb and son-in-law Joe Lamb. Two grandchildren – granddaughter Katie White and husband John, grandson Kyle Lamb and wife Erika. Two great-grandchildren, Abigail and William White.
He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Dolores Allen, and daughter-in-law, Ann Bailey Havard.
A reception will be after the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall of Parkview. Inurnment of ashes will be in Texas near the family farm in Willow Hole Cemetery, North Zulch. TX.
Memorials may be made to the Samaritan’s Purse of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.
