Obituary for Stanley Allen Self
FORT WORTH -- Dr. Stanley Allen Self was born in Dallas and spent his youth in Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Texas.
He graduated from Alamo Heights High School, San Antonio, Texas in 1944, at age 16 and received his B. A. in Economics from Texas A & M University in 1947 at age 19.
Allen, as he was known to all, earned his Master's degree in Economics from the University of North Texas in 1949 at age 21, then received his Ph. D. in Economics from the University of Oklahoma in 1958 with a minor in US History.
His post-doctoral studies included teaching at Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1961 and Carnegie-Mellon University Graduate School of Industrial Administration in 1963.
His academic honors included:
Texas A & M:
Distinguished Student, Distinguished Military Graduate, Candidate for Valedictorian, Cadet Corps Co-Editor of The Battalion (daily newspaper),
Cadet Corps Executive Officer and Acting Corps Commander,
Captain of Swimming Texas A & M and Southwest Conference Swimming Champion.
University of Oklahoma:
Beta Gamma Sigma (Business Honor Society)
Woodrow Wilson Fund Fellow, 1956-57
University of North Texas:
Ford Foundation Research Fellow, 1964.
President, Texas Conference, American Association of University Professors; Board Member, National AAUP, 1964-65.
Life Member, Southwest Division, Academy of Management.
Texas Christian University:
Omicron Delta Epsilon (Economics Honor Society).
Dr. Self was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in U. S. Army Artillery Reserve in 1949 and served on active duty during the Korean War. From 1951-1953 he served as Battery Executive Officer, Battalion Survey Officer and Battalion Adjutant, 198th Field Artillery Battalion.
While on active duty in 1955 he served at the Field Artillery Motor Officers School where he was first in class and then Battalion Executive Officer of the Reserve Field Artillery Observation Battalion from 1956 through 1957. Dr. Self was Honorably Discharged as Captain, U. S. Army Artillery in 1960.
Dr. Self is survived by his children Becky Doody, Scott Self and Fred Self from his first marriage to Gloria Pauline Rust, many grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Dr. Self is also survived by his second wife Marianne Stripling Self and her three daughters Margaret Berry, Lisa Evon and Lindsey Berry.
Allen was a long-time member of the Fort Worth Boat Club where he enjoyed sailing his Tiger Cat catamaran, his Cal 2-30 named Sprinter and Paradigm, his PT-30 amongst many other boats. He sailed regularly, winning the Annual FWBC regatta in the A Fleet several times. He was well known for his complete understanding and application of the gentlemanly rules of sailboat racing.
Dr. Self successfully operated a 420 acre cattle farm near Keller and taught Business classes at the University of North Texas. While living in Denton, he served on both the Planning and Zoning committee and the Denton City Council. As an early consultant to the DFW Airport Board, Dr. Self produced the economic analysis that enabled the sale of revenue bonds which built the airport.
Subsequently, he earned a position as a tenured professor at Texas Christian University where he taught in the School of Business for almost 25 years retiring as Emeritus Professor of Management. After teaching, he began a very successful economic consulting business until the last few years.
We will all miss his love, friendship and wise counsel.
