Paul E. Barrios(1920 - 2015)
Barrios, Paul E. 04/28/1920 ~ 04/12/2015 ESCONDIDO -- Two weeks shy of his 95th birthday, Paul E. Barrios passed away peacefully in his home. Paul often joked that his first and only job interview brought him to Escondido where he was actively involved in education for 35 years. He wore many hats science teacher, coach, ROTC instructor and Teachers Union President. Paul began and ended his teaching career with the Escondido Union High School District. In- between, he was a founding faculty member at San Marcos High School (where his grandson now teaches). He was raised in Donaldsonville, LA. He did his undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University. After serving in WWII from beginning to end, he left the south and proudly studied for his master's degree at UCLA using the GI Bill. He spent many summers studying at Cal Berkeley. While at UCLA, he met and married his wife of 50 years, Dolores, who preceded him in death in 2001. Together they enjoyed camping, bridge, and tennis. Paul continued playing bridge at the Joslyn Senior Center and on-line with people from all over the world. Paul was an avid fisherman and told many fish tales. Upon his retirement from teaching, he became an accomplished wood carver. He also spent time as an OASIS tutor for second graders. He is survived by three children: Rick (Brenda), Don (Lori), and Michele; and five grand- children: Bridget, Brody, Morgan, Alex and Cameron; and four great-granddaughters, (and a great-grandson on the way!) He will be fondly remembered as a witty, soft-spoken, kind man who never ever raised his voice! A Celebration of Life will be held at the Barrios Family Home on April 25th from 3:00-6:00pm.
