August 2, 1949 - December 2, 2018
Charles Ladon Crawford of Uvalde, Texas succumbed to death on December 2, 2018 in a San Antonio hospital after a long illness. He was born on August 2, 1949 in Crystal City, Texas to Charles Quitman and Billie Jean Harp Crawford, who preceded him in death, as well as a brother Jeffery Dow Crawford.
Charles graduated from Crystal City High School in 1967, and went on to Texas Lutheran College on a football scholarship. He received an Associate degree from Southwest Texas, and an Industrial Engineering degree from Texas A&M University, Class of ’72. He played football and baseball in high school and went on to play football for Texas Lutheran College and Texas A&M University.
Charlie joined the Marine Corps and twenty years later retired to Uvalde as a Lt. Colonel. He trained in fixed wing single engine, instrument qualified, and helicopter qualified. After flight school he was stationed at Camp Pendleton in HMA 169 and in the Western Pacific, assigned as a 7565 Pilot HMA AH-1. Charlie had 20 years of accident free flying. He often said he had as many landings as he had takeoffs.
In Uvalde he was an active Real Estate Broker specializing in farm and ranch sales. He also innovated and produced beautiful leather products including Crawjacks, the boot jacks that you see advertised in magazines such as Cowboys and Indians.
Charlie was on committees at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. His love with the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo began over 40 years ago where he served on the Contestant Committee and became inducted in The Heels of Cheyenne Frontier Days in 2002. He also served as Vice Chairman on the Uvalde Emergency Medical Services Board (EMS) from 2000-2018.
Charlie was a kind and gentle man who loved his family and friends, a Renaissance Man of many talents and interests. Charlie valued the many friends he made in high school, college, Marine Corp, Cheyenne Frontier Days, and treasured the time he spent with each of them. He will be missed and remembered by many.
He is survived by his wife Diane Farris Crawford. They met in 1985 on a blind date and married on August 22, 1989 in San Antonio.
His brother Jimmy and Kathy and their children Kaitlyn Crawford; Sydney Crawford; and Brad and Morgann Crawford and son Case.
Charlie’s sister Annette Crawford Nixon and her children Kimberlea Nixon and Brandon Rose and children Kassidy and Boone; Kris Nixon; Kent and Sarah Nixon and children Kennzie, Kash, and Kennedy.
First cousins and friends, Sherry Harp (Delmar) Hiller, Jeannie (Les) Winter and Betty (James) Ladner.
Uncle Luman Holman and his children, Wade (Betty) Holman, Charles (Jody) Holman, Carol (Bobby) Holder, Nancy (Tony) Bolton and Diane (Bruce) Stripling.
Mother-in-law, Kathleen Farris; Donna (Stan) Tollett, and their children, Stanley Tollett, Jr., Kimberly Tollett Horton and children Quinn and Tessa; Debra (Edmund) Gates, and children, Matt and Katherine Lackey and children Charlie and Reece, Lena and Jason McClain, Scott and Sapna Lackey.
He has long been Uncle Charlie to Harper and Candace Ray and children Parker, Pierson, Prestin, and Presleigh. Hunter and Melissa Ray and children Madelyn and Chloe, Beau and Haylea Best and son Thomas.
Services are Saturday, December 8, 2018, 10:00 AM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, 220 S. Getty St., Uvalde, Texas. Pallbearers are Brad Crawford, Kent Nixon, Matt Lackey, Harper Ray, Hunter Ray and Jim Condry. Burial with military honors will be on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at 10:45 AM, at Fort Sam National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
