Louis Martin Igo
May 24, 1927 - November 12, 2018

Born May 24, 1927, Louis was the third of nine children born to George Washington Igo and Winnie Ellen O’Neal. They moved from Oklahoma to Morton, Texas, in 1932 where the family started farming. Louis entered the army in 1945 at age 18 and completed basic training in August just as President Truman ordered the atom bombs to be dropped in Japan. This resulted in a change of assignment to Vienna, Austria as part of the occupation forces in Europe rather than heading to combat in the Pacific Theatre.

After his discharge from the army, he finished high school and attended Eastern New Mexico State University. During that time, he met a young woman from Morton who would become the one love of his life -- June Jones. They married on June 5, 1948, and moved to a cotton farm west of Morton where they started their family (Linda, Larry and Glenda). After moving from the farm into town, he worked as a mechanic. The next move to Levelland found him working on “classic” Chevrolets at Bob Reid Chevrolet. During this time, he enrolled at South Plains Junior College and completed his Associates Degree.

In 1963 he and June took a leap of faith and moved to Houston. He had a job teaching in the auto shop at Bellaire High School, but June did not have a teaching position yet, and they did not have a place to live. This was a special time in his life when he had the opportunity to not only instruct young men about car repair, but he was also able to mentor them and make a lasting impression in their lives. In the meantime, Louis continued taking classes during summer breaks and at night until he completed both his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Industrial Education at Texas A&M. He also inspired young men who competed in the Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest and won in both regional and national competitions. Several of those students continued to stay in touch even after Louis moved from Houston. After 10 years in Houston, Louis and June moved to Austin where he was Supervisor of Industrial Arts teachers for AISD, and subsequently the Vocational Director. He stayed in that position until his retirement.

While in Austin, he and June searched surrounding areas until they found the perfect acreage outside Georgetown to build their dream home where they both lived for the remainder of their lives.

On May 27, 1997, Louis and June suffered the unimaginable loss of their son, Larry, daughter-in-law, Joan, and their children, Audrey, John and Paul in the tornado that struck Jarrell, Texas. Their deep faith and love for each other helped them make it through this terrible time of loss.
Louis and June shared a love of genealogy and spent countless hours researching, visiting dusty courthouse basements and cemeteries, and interviewing distant relations. This resulted in several published books on the Igo and Jones ancestors.

After June passed away in 1998, Louis devoted his time to friends, family and tractors. He was greatly loved by his family -- Linda, Lynn and Lanae’ Cobb; and Glenda, Phil, Kelli and Wesley Maikell -- as well as his extended family. They all looked to him for support in times of need and for his moral leadership and kindness. He was always there for anyone who need his guidance, friendship and expertise. Louis was a man who will never be equaled or replaced and we already miss him dearly.

Louis is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Fred Igo and sisters Wanda Gunnels, Glenna Jones and Martha Igo as well as both son-in-laws, Phil Maikell and Lynn Cobb. He is survived by the remaining four of his eight siblings: Joe and Lalee Igo of Granbury, Ida and Jesse Jones of Lubbock, Bill and Betty Igo of Gold Canyon, AZ; Betty and George Cooper of San Angelo as well as his sister-in-law Juanita Igo of El Dorado and June’s sister Janelle and husband Jim of Refugio. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and their families -- he was their beloved Uncle Louis. Most of all, he leaves behind a legacy in the form of his own family: Linda Igo Cobb of Santa Fe, NM, and her daughter Lanae’ Cobb De Jong and Jelmer De Jong and their precious babies Llewyn and Denley; and Glenda Igo Maikell and her children, Kelli Maikell and Wesley Maikell of Round Rock, TX.

Because Louis was such an advocate for helping young people further their education, the family is requesting donations be made to the Igo Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. Checks can be made to Igo Scholarship Fund and sent to 1604 Frontier Trail, Round Rock, TX 78681.

Louis’ favorite scripture which so accurately describes him: “And what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Amos 6:8

A Visitation with the family will be held at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 6-8 pm. Funeral Services will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 11 am at First Baptist Church in Georgetown, with the burial to follow at IOOF Cemetery.
