Gene E.
Box
1940 - 2018

LITTLETON – Lt. Col. (Ret) Gene E. Box, a resident of Chelmsford for 34 years, passed away at his home on Monday, November 11, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Jeanine Annette (Hamblett) Box for 57 years.

Gene was born in Dallas, TX on April 9, 1940 and was a son of the late Grady G. and Fay Bell (Franklin) Box.

From a young age, Gene was very patriotic, enrolling in the ROTC program at Texas A & M University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. After joining the Air Force in 1962, Gene's first military assignment was at Klamath Falls, Oregon, home to the 173rd Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard. While stationed in Oregon, he was sent to Florida, Alabama and Mississippi for military education. Gene then spent a year at Thule Air Force Base in Greenland followed by assignments in Colorado Springs, CO and Aviano Air Force Base in the northeast region of Italy. In 1975, Gene was transferred to Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA where he served until he retired in 1984 with 22 years of service. Following his discharge, he continued managing military programs in the private sector until late 1996. Most of Gene's career was spent working on Radar and Missile Warning Technology.

Gene was a member of the Stony Brook Rod & Gun Club where he enjoyed being part of a trap shooting team along with his son-in-law, Jeff Mescall and two of his grandchildren; Colby and Zack. In his retirement years, he also loved sailing his 36-foot sailboat in Narragansett Bay and to Block Island, Martha’s Vinyard, and Nantucket. Gene was always a history buff and was an avid reader. He loved spending time with his family, especially traveling with them both across the United States and overseas. Gene was proud to have toured much of the world with high ranking military personnel.

In addition to his loving wife, Gene is survived by his children; Russell Wayne and Kathryn Box of Milford, Jeffrey Brian and Olga Box of Groton, and Michelle Lynette Mescall and her husband Jeff of Chelmsford and his four grandchildren; Colby, Olivia, and Zackary Box and Sean Mescall. He also leaves a brother, Jack Box and his wife Sarah of Lafayette, CO., and their children Christi, Leslie, and Jason; and a sister-in-law, Anna (Box) Flippin of Mesquite, TX., and her daughters Jan and Nancy. Gene was pre-deceased by his older brother Gaylord Box (1988).

Gene was a loving caring husband, father, neighbor and friend.
