W. S. EDMONDS
SEPTEMBER 22, 1913 – NOVEMBER 15, 2018
W.S. Edmonds, 105, passed away Thursday November 15, 2018 at Hospice Brazos Valley surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be at 10 am Saturday November 24, 2018 followed by a service at 11am at Memorial Funeral Chapel 1515 South College Avenue, Bryan, TX. Interment will follow at Bryan City Cemetery at 1111 N Texas Ave with full military honors. A reception to follow that will be at VFW Post 4692 at 1447 S FM 2818 in Bryan. Everyone is invited to attend all events.
Mr. Edmonds lived a long life and was born in the family home on Boyett St in Northgate in College Station in 1913. His parents were WS "Bill" Edmonds and Ima Lilly Boyett. At the age of 11, his father passed away. He lived for a short time in San Antonio then returned to College Station with his mother to be with family. His mother married Wilmer Higgins who raised him and encouraged his love for Texas A&M.
He attended College Station High School and went on to enroll in Texas A&M College earning a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Administration. He was a graduate of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1938 and the second oldest living Aggie at the time of his passing.
Mr. Edmonds became a cotton classifier in Bryan and New Orleans then returned to College Station to work for the Postal Service. After Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1942 he volunteered for Officer Candidate School for the United States Army and served as a courier at the Pentagon delivering maps and documents. He was then sent overseas to New Guinea where he fell in love with the country and its people. He delivered maps for the planned invasion of Japan and even to Charles Lindbergh. He once sailed to the Philippines for a delivery and his ship was fired upon by a Japanese sub, but they were able to outrun it. Upon arrival to Manila he discovered the war was over. He spent some time in Japan until he was discharged. He continued in the Reserves and retired as a Major.
During his map delivery trips he visited San Francisco and met the lady soon to be mother of his children, Mary Marguerite McDermott. He had to suddenly leave Marge without warning one night for a mission and when he eventually returned more than a year later she was still there. They married in Brady, TX January 20, 1947 on the way back to College Station and made a home in a house W.S. built at 102 Church Ave in Northgate. They had two children, William Sherman in 1948 and Ima Michele in 1950. Marge passed away in 1963, he then married Faye Krolczyk in 1965 who passed away in June 1967, and then married Eleanor Mosso in 1968 who passed away in May 2011.
W.S. continued with the Postal Service and retired from the MSC Post Office. He always had a love for his Aggies and became a gatekeeper for football games and a ticket usher for basketball games for more than 35 years. He also worked out at Texas World Speedway. He had been very active in the American Legion Post 159 as a Life Member and Post Commander and VFW Post 4692 as a Past President. His passions were the Aggies, duck hunting, fishing and watching Gunsmoke episodes. His "Secret to Life" was cornbread, buttermilk and a raw egg in his younger years, then cherry turnovers and V8 in his later years. He had a clear mind, was an avid story teller and drove his own truck until he was 101. He made it to 105 and lived out his days at his home in Bryan due to the care of "all his ladies" daughter Michele, Linda, Mary, Sunny, Joyce, Leann and Cheryl and his friend & neighbor Kenneth. W.S. was preceded in death by his mother, Ima Lilly Boyett; father, William "Bill" Edmonds; step-father Wilmer Higgins; brother, Wilmer Higgins Jr; wife and mother of his children, Mary Marguerite McDermott; wife, Faye Krolczyk; wife, Eleanor Mosso; son, William Sherman Edmonds; and son-in-law James Robert "Jimmy" Jackson.
W.S. is survived by daughter, Michele Edmonds Jackson; grandson, Keith Jackson and his wife Sabina and daughter Gracie; granddaughter, Jennifer Jackson Thomas and her husband Jeff and sons Jackson and Jameson; and cousin Jack Worbington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, American Legion Post 159 and VFW Post 4692 in his name.
