Robert William Callaway will be missed by all for his kind and generous heart, love of life, and his passion and visionary talent as an architect. Bob was born in Baytown, (Goose Creek), TX on July 23, 1930 and passed away on Nov 4, 2018 in San Antonio. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Architecture in 1952, where he was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, achieving the rank of Captain, two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.
Bob came to San Antonio to practice architecture in 1956. His keen eye for style and design soon led him into real estate development. He built the iconic Tree House, San Antonio’s first garden-style apartments, and continued with the development of high-rise condos, hotels, office and retail buildings across Texas and beyond, as well as private luxury student living communities named The Callaway House at several major universities. Bob’s hallmark in business and in his life was quality, class and style. Two of his most notable local developments are 4001 N. New Braunfels and 200 Patterson.
Bob took an active interest in his community through participation on the board of a number of institutions, including Colonial Frost Bank and the Development Board of Incarnate Word University, where he enjoyed a close friendship with the Sisters of Charity. He was President of Oak Hills Country Club, a founding member of The Club at Sonterra, a member of the San Antonio Country Club and the Argyle. His ancestor served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, thus Bob was in line for membership in the Society of Cincinnati.
Bob loved his alma mater, Texas A&M, and he had a true passion for Aggie football. He was a man’s man, equally at home at a construction site, the board room, a closing in a NYC skyscraper, the Argyle Hunt Room, the golf course, an Osborn Island duck blind, or a South Texas hunting camp with his buddies. Those who knew Bob were touched by his genuine love of people. He was great fun, a wonderful story teller, and always loved good food and drink with his legion of friends. His lively wit, humor, stories, and sweetness will be remembered and treasured for many years to come.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, William and Della Withers Callaway; sisters Margaret Callaway and Gwen Callaway; niece Margo Holmes Houston; and stepson Randy Finch. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lois Kendrick Callaway; three sons Greg Callaway (and Illeana Rodriguez), Jeff Callaway and wife Mary, Page Callaway and wife Elizabeth; step-daughter Taylor Finch Eichler; sister Billie Dell Holmes and husband Tommy; grandchildren Erin and Gracie Page Callaway; great-grandchildren Cashon and Zain Callaway; nephews Tracy Holmes and wife Liza, Patrick Holmes, and Kelly Thies and wife Karen; grandniece Samantha Houston; grandnephews Thomas and Grant Holmes; Step grandchildren Krista and James Eichler, Jr.; sister in law Lova Sneckner and husband Sunny, nieces and nephews Debra, Cathy, Sherri and Rick Sneckner, Shannon Turner and husband Jon, and Dean Miller.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, Nov 19, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 404 N. Alamo, San Antonio, TX. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org/donate or Texas Biomedical Research Institute at www.txbiomed.org.
