Rockford, Illinois

Jan 4, 1941 – Nov 4, 2018 (Age 77)

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather Gary Keith New, of Graham, Texas, born on January 4, 1941 in Pampa, Texas, to the late Jo Edelen and the late Kenneth New, passed away at age 77 on November 4, 2018 in Rockford, Illinois. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family.
Gary attended Texas A&M and graduated from Rush University Medical Center with a degree in Bachelors of Science in Nursing. He worked for Ford Tractors for 31 years. He then pursued his passion for a career in the Medical field and practiced nursing at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, IL, Hayward Memorial Hospital in Hayward, Wisconsin, and finally at Fisherman's Hospital in Marathon, FL. During most of this time, from 1978-1999, Gary also worked at Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District (a former volunteer fire department) in Sleepy Hollow, IL. He started as a lieutenant and retired as Head of EMS and Deputy Chief, following his love of helping and mentoring others.
Gary was the beloved husband of Cynthia L New (Lage). He was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael New and Joe New. Gary is survived by his sons, Mark K New (Valerie Norris) and Michael L New (Noelle Quinn); and grandchildren, Zachary TG New, Kylie AB New, Caleb M New, Jacob Q New, and Cynthia Grace New, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends that are like family. He was loved dearly and will be missed by so many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Gary's name to Rockford Rescue Mission (https://www.rockfordrescuemission.org/) in honor of his lifelong desire to help those in need.
Friends and family are welcome to join us in the Celebration of Life Memorial for Gary on Saturday, November 10 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District Station 2,

Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, 60118
The Fireman's Memorial will begin at 5:15 p.m. sharp, followed by personal remembrances and dinner. This will be a casual event, so come ready celebrate and share your memories of the wonderful man that Gary was.
