GEORGE RICHARD SPANGLE
NOVEMBER 2, 1946 - OCTOBER 30, 2018

SPANGLE, George Richard "Rick", age 71, passed away October 30, 2018 due to COPD complicated by quadriplegia. On December 1, 2017, Rick suffered a tragic fall that resulted in paralysis from the neck down. He remained positive and hopeful for the next 10 months as he battled the ongoing struggles of being a quadriplegic.

Rick was born in Granite, Oklahoma on November 2, 1946, the first born to George William Spangle and Muriel Zellmann Spangle. When he was 4 years old, the family moved to Garland, Texas where he, three brothers and two sisters were raised.

After graduating from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas in 1964, Rick became a member of the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M College. In 1968, he graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Marketing and went directly into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran who earned a Bronze Star for his service during the war.

Rick is survived by his first son, Gregory Alan from his first wife, Linda and a son, Richard Ryan and daughter, Regina Marie, from his second wife, Loretta. He is survived by four grandsons, Travis, Casey, Joshua and Orion. Rick was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ron. He is also survived by siblings Randy, Pam, Pene and Rob.

Rick was a lifelong entrepreneur and was always looking for new business opportunities. He was an inventor, a writer, a dancer, a traveler and a free-spirit who enjoyed learning and discovering new things. He was considered the "Hippie Daddy" to a community of loved ones he called family. And, after doing extensive genealogy research, he became affectionately known as Uncle Cousin Ricky among the Spangle family members that otherwise would have never met. Rick loved to argue, but even more, he loved to love.

Funeral and Military Honors will be held Friday, November 30th at 1:30pm at the DFW National Cemetery. Due to time constraints at the cemetery, the funeral procession will meet at DBU, 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211 at 12:45pm (main entrance, first parking lot on the right) and travel to the cemetery together. Following the funeral, the family will have a reception in Rick's honor at Uncle Julio's, 150 E. I-30, Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Lone Star Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans in honor of George Richard Spangle. Send donations to PVofA, 3925 Forest Lane, Garland, TX 75042. Attn: Glendon Bentley
