Evelyn Kyle Carrell
1921 - 2018

Benbrook, TX- Evelyn Kyle Carrell,97, entered the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom on September 19, 2018. Mrs. Carrell, a longtime resident of Los Fresnos, TX passed away peacefully at her home in Benbrook, TX, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 2, 1921 in Mercedes, TX to Annie and Coin Kyle. She married the love of her life, JW Carrell Sr. on March 9, 1941 at the Los Fresnos United Methodist Church.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband JW Carrell, Sr., her son Floyd Wayne Carrell, infant grandson Colby Carrell, great granddaughter Rebecca Niehaus, infant twin great-great granddaughters Amber and Autumn Gagne, son- in- law James Ashely, Sr., daughter- in- law Eva Carrell and sister Gladys Faye Morris.

Evelyn, along with her husband JW, were members of the first graduating class of Los Fresnos High School in 1939. She was the last living member of her class. Evelyn received her BA Degree in elementary education from Pan American College in Edinburg, TX in 1954. She then began her teaching career at Los Fresnos Elementary School. She received her Master’s Degree in Reading from Texas A&M University in 1969. Evelyn was an elementary school teacher, reading lab specialist, assistant elementary principal, and curriculum supervisor until her retirement in 1986.

In April of 2016 Evelyn was recognized at the Centennial Celebration as the oldest living graduate of Los Fresnos High School. She also led the October 2016 homecoming parade.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a longtime member of Los Fresnos United Methodist Church where she was Sunday School Teacher and MYF sponsor. She was also a member of UMW where she held several positions, taught bible school, was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Her favorite hobbies were reading and sewing. Evelyn was also involved in numerous other activities in her church and community.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Ruth Anne Cole (Buster) of Columbus, TX; Linda Kay Ashley of Springfield, OR, Buddy Carrell (Pelma) of Tracy, CA, L.C. Carrell (Denise) of Lott, TX, Janet Patton (George) of Benbrook, TX, Nancy Bolt (Tommy) of Port Neches, TX, her sister Anna Cordelia Falcon (Jack) of Quartzite, AZ as well as 20 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, one niece and four nephews.

Evelyn ad JW were interned side by side at a graveside service officiated by sons-in-law Dr. Charles Cole and George Patton at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX on October 20, 2018.
