Captain Kevin John McKenna
NOVEMBER 20, 1949 – OCTOBER 5, 2018

Captain Kevin John McKenna, Merchant Marine Master, 68, of Crozet, passed away unexpectedly on October 5, 2018. Kevin was born on November 20, 1949, in Fayetteville, NC, to the late Colonel James Owen McKenna and Elvera Hilsabeck McKenna. As a military kid, Kevin grew up in many different places around the world. He graduated from the Texas Maritime Academy of Texas A&M University and spent 40 years at sea. While attending Texas A&M, Kevin met Martha, his wife, at a party in Galveston, Texas. Despite her being a Longhorn, they immediately hit it off and never looked back. After graduating from A&M, he was also in the United States Naval Reserve. Kevin moved to Charlottesville with his wife and son in 1984.

He will be remembered for his fierce friendship, amazing stories, and generous heart. Throughout his life Kevin enjoyed cooking, teaching, and traveling. After retiring Kevin focused on farming and could be found every Saturday at the Crozet Farmers Market in his blue truck. Kevin was also an avid horseman and at times was a member of the Bull Run, Farmington, and Oak Ridge Hunt Clubs. Kevin was fortunate to have many close and long lasting friendships. The family is very thankful for all the support, cards, and emails that have been pouring in.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Martha McKenna, and his son, Christopher Ryan McKenna, DVM. In addition to his parents, Kevin was preceded in death by James Owen McKenna Junior, his brother. The family invites friends, family, and those whose lives he touched to gather and celebrate Kevin’s life on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 2-4pm, at Teague Funeral Service in Charlottesville with a reception to follow.
