Van Deventer, George, Jr. M.
February 25, 1951 - September 23, 2018
Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, Squadron 4, Air Force outfit, Fightin’ Phantom 4

George Van Deventer, 67, a loving father, son, brother and friend went to be with our Lord on Sunday, September 23, 2018. George passed as a result of pancreatic cancer, but his final moments were spent surrounded by his loving family.
George was born on February 25, 1951 in Alexandria, Louisiana, to parents George and Willa Van Deventer. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1973 with he studied Engineering and was a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. George’s pride and joy came from being a member of the Corps. To George it was more than a university; it was the home of the Aggie family with a long history of spirit and tradition. The Corps have long been known as the “Keepers of the Spirit and Guardians of Tradition” because one of their key roles is in the preservation of these time-honored traditions. George embraced these traditions and his excitement of all things A&M spilled over to our entire family. We all still remember our family trip when George received his senior boots. Our mom had made and sold jewelry to pay for his boots. It was a gesture of giving that George never forgot. To honor that spirit of giving George donated his boots to the Corps to be used by a cadet that cannot financially afford their own pair. They were on display at his funeral to honor George but will be returned to the Corps. For George, nothing could bring a smile like a fellow Aggie or a memory sparked conversation of Aggieland.

George married his sweetheart Cindy in 1973 and the couple had two children together, Holly and Mark. George was known for his unwavering faith, devotion and integrity. George worked in the gas turbine repair industry for over 40 years, traveling worldwide to provide services to private and public sector customers. George was highly respected in his field; he was admired by many and left a legacy through all he mentored. As the family grew, work took them from the Dallas area, to Brownsville to Denver to Salt Lake City to Syracuse, back to Dallas, to Orlando and finally back to Dallas a final time. All the while George was an active member of the churches they attended. George would go to any length to care for his family, extended family, and grandkids. Family and church always came first. George’s joy for life and family was contagious. His stories would captivate a room and fill it with laughter. George was the spiritual leader of our family. George is survived by his wife, Cindy; son, Mark; daughter, Holly and her husband, Tony; grandchildren, Connor and Ethan; siblings, John, Patrick and Ann. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willa and George Van Deventer.
We can all count ourselves lucky to have known such a wonderful man, husband, brother, and friend. George Sr and Willa would be proud of the life he led. We have lost one of us. And we grieve as a family. We know that in George’s last hour, without a doubt, he took the hand of Jesus to guide him home. George fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7

A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church located at 5801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano, Texas 75093 with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate George’s life.
