He was the only child of Mamie Petri Petty and Robert Russell Petty, Sr. Bob was a lifelong resident of Nolan, Texas. Bob graduated from Divide High School and was the Valedictorian of his class in 1959. Bob attended Texas A&M where he received his degree in Animal Science and Animal Husbandry in 1963. He was a member of the Corp of Cadets (ROTC) company D-1, “Spider D”. He also received his commission into the United States Army the same day as graduation. He received a deferment to do graduate work towards a Master’s degree in Animal Genetics and Statistics. He was called to Active duty on January 1, 1965. Bob served in the Medical Service Corps being stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas; Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas; Fort Knox in Kentucky and Fort Benning, Georgia before being deployed to Vietnam until the end of December 1966. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to the family ranch in Nolan.

Bob was married to the love of his life Nadene Daws Petty on August 11, 1962 (only 4 months after they met on April 11, 1962). They celebrated their 56th Anniversary an August 11, 2018. Bob was a rancher and farmer. His passion was Black Angus cattle. Bob and Nadene along with Bob’s parents formed RR Ranch partnership in January 1967. Today known as RR Ranch. Bob also farmed as well as ranched. Bob’s passion for Black Angus cattle began while he was in High school. That is when he and his father purchased 10 Angus cows out of Arkansas. Angus cattle were a novelty at the time in West Texas, which was the heart of Hereford Country. Bob grew his herd of Angus cattle to produce several outstanding bulls which were recognized for their performance by the American Angus Association. RR Ranch began having Annual bull sales in 1969 and had 42 Annual Angus bull sales, the last one in 2011. At two separate bull sales, 100 bulls were offered in the Annual sale. Bull sales were family events, where all the family helped. Bob was a big sports fan and loved to read. Bob and Nadene followed their boys sporting events. It began with farm league baseball and went all the way through high school football, basketball and baseball which included state playoff games all over the state. Bob loved going to the livestock shows where his sons showed Angus heifers at the stock shows all over Texas. Bob would be so proud his granddaughter, Isabella, is showing an Angus Heifer in 2019 stock show. Bob worked right alongside his workers and his sons. He never asked anyone to do a chore he was not willing to do himself; from hoeing cotton, to picking up rocks from farmland. Bob instilled in his sons to always treat someone as you would want to be treated, an example which he followed.

Family was important to Bob, being an only child. He welcomed adding daughters-in-law and grandchildren, all whom he loved dearly. He was especially proud to have two “Aggie” grandchildren. Over the years, Bob was a member of the American Angus Association (serving as a state delegate and alternate delegate to the annual convention several times), Texas Angus Association (serving several terms on the Board of Directors and President in 1999). He was on the Hospital Board, was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served on the Finance Committee. He was also a member of the Texas A&M Former Students Association. He was Aggie through and through. He received the Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award in 1988. Bob was one of the first people to introduce Crop Insurance to farmers in Nolan County beginning in 1984 (a year that it forgot to rain- cotton planted in May did not come up until October). Bob and Nadene would operate Petty Crop Insurance for 20 years. Bob and RR Ranch were featured in two different magazines for his outstanding work in breeding Angus cattle. He received several commendations while serving in the Army. He was a Vietnam Veteran.

While Bob was at Texas A&M, he was a member of Corps of Cadets (ROTC). He was in company D-1 “Spider D”. Bob was a member of Phi Kappa Phi (academic fraternity), Saddle and Sirloin Club, Alpha Zeta, a member of the Wool Judging team and a member of the Livestock Judging team.
