1924-2018
J. Arnold Smith was born in Wood County, Texas to Dr. C. Harry and Lillie Smith March 12, 1924. After education, military service and time with Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, he moved to Houston in 1951. Arnold remained in Houston the rest of his life except for brief professional assignments in California, Japan and Italy. He held engineering degrees from Louisiana Tech University and Texas A&M University. He served in the US Army during World War II. Arnold retired from Texaco's Engineering Department in 1987 as manager of the Project Management and Construction Division. His retirement years were spent volunteering.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Muriel Smith and brother Chester Smith. Survivors include his son Curtis and wife Debbie, daughter Frances S. Kelley and husband Eddie, stepdaughter Janet Bodin and husband Bob, grandchildren Hallye Smith, Cuyler Smith and wife Sharon, Curtis Kelley and wife Andrea, Shannon Miller and husband Curtis, Roseanne Bodin, Christina Bodin Smith and husband Curt, great grandchildren Avery Smith, Carter Smith, Camilla Kelley, Phoebe Kelley and Quinn Miller.
A memorial service will be conducted on October 12, 2018 at 10:00am at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the following charities is recommended. Arnold spent a great deal of his retirement years volunteering at the St. Luke's United Methodist Church Woodshop (www.stlukesmethodist.org). The woodshop was dear to Arnold's heart, thus notate the donation to be directed to the woodshop account. The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf.org) is dedicated to finding a cure for this blood cancer.
The family thanks the staff at the Lymphoma and Myeloma Center at MD Anderson, The Gardens of Bellaire and the Houston Hospice staffs for their superb effort and treatment.
