Jay L. Green
November 17, 1944 - September 05, 2018

Jay L. Green was a wonderful man who was greatly loved, is deeply missed and will always be cherished. Our “Papaw”, as his grandchildren would call him, and “Jaybird” as he was called by his beloved wife, was an amazing husband, father and grandfather and was a teller of old stories and funny (oftentimes irreverent!) jokes like no other.

Jay was born on November 17, 1944 in Temple, Texas to Cli? and Hazel Green where they resided in a home built lovingly stone by stone by his father. They later moved to Austin where he graduated from McCallum High School in 1962. Jay married his college girlfriend and love, Mary Dell Everts, in September 1966 despite the fact that he bled Aggie maroon and she wore t.u. burnt orange. Clearly their college rivalries were outmatched by their enduring love for one another as they celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary the day before he passed away.

Upon graduating from Texas, A&M University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, he enlisted as a member of the Texas Army National Guard serving for 7 years and attaining the rank of second lieutenant. He then worked for 37 years at Lone Star Gas and other utility companies, primarily in the customer services area.

Jay volunteered for many years at the Special Olympics through his involvement with the Dallas Kiwanis Club. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Lone Star Credit Union, as well as the Old Shepard Place Homeowner’s Association.

Jay’s faith journey was nurtured and grew at Christ United Methodist Church for over 33 years where he served as an usher for worship services, volunteered with Men’s Service Group, as well as House on the Corner. He was a member of the PACE Sunday School Class and was a supportive choir spouse. His faith deepened as he participated in Disciple Bible Study classes.

Nobody loved to captivate a room with a good story or a funny joke more than Jay. He possessed a great sense of adventure and loved the feel of wind in his face whether by airplane, or by motorcycle, or on an epic family road trip. His vast collection of paper road maps, highlighted and sticky noted Mapsco books and detailed trip planning notes will be cherished forever by his family.

Jay’s legacy is carried on by his two beautiful daughters as each embody some of his best character traits; one steadfast and resolute, and the other tenderhearted and adventurous. His spirit will be carried on by his wife Mary Dell, his daughters Cheryl and her husband Greg Nelson, their children Gil, Sloan and Beck, Emily Smith and her family, Tobin, Heidi and Lorelei, as well as extended family and friends from every season and walk of his precious life.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 14th at Christ United Methodist Church on 3101 Coit Road in Plano, Texas.
