James Rensselaer Bowen

James Rensselaer Bowen, 55 yrs old, went to his Heavenly home on August 3, 2018 to be with his Lord & Savior.

James, aka, Jay, Son, Jim, Sweetheart, Dad, Uncle Jay, Uncle Jim & Jimbo.

James was born in New London, Connecticut on July 16, 1963.

He is survived by his wife, Cassie Jo Bowen; sons, Eric William Bowen and Andrew John Bowen; parents, Lawrence & Carol Bowen; sister, Rebekah Smith & husband Shawn Smith, niece, Jessica Smith; nephew, Ethan & Shawna Smith; nephew, David Smith; parent’s in-law John & Anita Butcher; sister-in-law, Jayna Martin; nephew, Ryan Martin; niece, Ashley Martin; brother-in-law, John Butcher, Jr.; nephew, John ‘Tre’ Butcher, II; and his beloved dog, Sluggo & ‘grand-dog, Max.!

James graduated from Texas Tech University, served his country as an Air Force missile officer, and later gained his Master’s Degree from Texas A&M. He began his career at Pantex in 1998 as a Safety Engineer in Amarillo, Tx. He was an accomplished martial artist, enjoyed walking the dog with his beloved Cassie, going to the gym, and was an avid reader. He was a dedicated employee and enjoyed his work.

As Lawrence & Carol have stated, they saw Jay truly ‘come to life’ when he met the loves of his life, Cassie, Eric and Andrew in 2001.

James and Cassie were married on March 15, 2003 and led a love life of devotion & faith. He took great pride in raising his sons, Eric & Andrew, who follow in his footsteps at Texas Tech. He was a very loving and devoted family man.

James was a man of great strength in so many ways and fought a battle with rapidly progressing ALS. He fought with courage, grace, and never complained. When asked how he was doing he would reply, “I’m great except for this ALS nonsense.” He was a man above reproach, who was generous, caring, kind, patient, intelligent, honorable, humble, and handsome. Although a man of few words, Jim had a great sense of humor.

Jim married his Princess;

He rescued & equipped his two sons;

He lived a life of great character.



Jim fought the good fight,

Jim finished the race,

And Jim kept the faith;

Now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to James Rensselaer Bowen, on that day—

And to all who have longed for our Lord’s appearing.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 6, 2018, at St. Stephen United Methodist Church with Stan Cosby, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors , Amarillo
