Deryl Dean Broers
DECEMBER 27, 1930 – JULY 23, 2018

Deryl D. Broers passed away peacefully at his home in Belleville on July 23, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
Born to Ferne and Ernest Broers in Cazenovia, Illinois, Deryl was a soft-spoken man who enjoyed sports and mathematics, loved the St Louis Cardinals, and was a master gardener who liked nothing more than rhapsodizing about his prized tomato plants. He grew dozens of varieties at the local White Farm for charity. Like his three brothers, Richard, Milford and Jerry, Deryl was athletic, competing in four sports and excelling academically at Metamora High School, and later playing in Air Force basketball and softball leagues. During his 23-year Air Force career, the meteorologist traveled to numerous countries and was stationed overseas at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Yongsan, Korea and Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, as well as at Air Force bases in Ohio, Texas, Illinois, and Nebraska. The Air Force officer attended Eureka College, Illinois, earned a bachelor’s degree in Meteorology from Texas A&M University and earned a master’s degree from Wayne State University, Michigan.

An avid and skilled bridge player, Deryl met and married Valerie Devine in June 1953 in Fairborn, Ohio, a union that lasted until her death on January 25, 2017. Deryl and Val loved to travel, both during Deryl’s Air Force career and in retirement, visiting most countries in Europe and Asia, as well as most of the United States, Canada and Mexico. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked in the food industry. He spent his final retirement racking up decades of volunteer service, donating his time to Shelter Shop, Bethany Place, Memorial Hospital, PSOP, University of Illinois Extension White Farm and the Humane Society.

Deryl is survived by his brother Richard of Roanoke, Il, his four daughters, Kathy (Joe) Kitterman of Manhattan, Ks., Karen Osborn (Bill Newton) of Arlington, Va., Kim Broers (Andie Swan) of Kansas City, Mo., and Kelley Pruden (Juan Boldizsar) of Belleville, Il., as well as eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was much loved, and he adored his family.

Deryl requested that any donations in his memory be sent to the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, PO Box 831, Belleville, Il 62222.

Services: The family invites friends to join us for a celebration of Deryl’s life from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Valhalla Gardener Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill. A private family service will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with full military honors.
