November 19, 1933 - February 4, 2018

A celebration of life for Carolyn Marie Pettey was held Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church in Jewett with the Reverends Billy Bob Evans and Allen Crosby officiating. Interment followed the services at Jewett Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Michael and Nicholas Williford, Don Parr, Edward Hays, Jason Evans, and David and Wayne Barnhart. Honorary pallbearers were Burnia Jones, Art Little, Bill Hughes, Bob Christian, Carroll Smith, Ralph Cole, Richard Ellis, and Eddie Gonzales.

Carolyn Marie Easley Pettey, loving wife, precious mother, beloved grandmother, and faithful friend received her glorified body in the presence of Jesus Christ on February 4, 2018, after a brief illness. Carolyn lived well and loved extravagantly. She enjoyed doting on her grandchildren and following their events, traveling and playing bridge with her friends, a good game of 88, and celebrating holidays with her family. She delighted in hearing her grandchildren sing and play instruments, and spent countless hours on the phone, serving as counselor, confidant, and encourager to all who knew her. She embodied Christ’s love on earth, and blessed the lives of everyone she encountered with unfailing kindness, generosity, forgiveness, strength, faith, and joy.

Carolyn was born in Bremond, Texas to Clint and Iris Easley on November 19, 1933. She accepted Christ as her savior at the age of nine. From childhood, her playful sense of humor and quick wit brought joy to her family and friends. Carolyn’s exceptional gift for making others feel loved and appreciated won her the loyalty and admiration of her peers wherever she went. Carolyn graduated from Bremond High School in 1951, where she was a majorette and was named class favorite. She attended Texas A&M University and Sam Houston State University, where she was a member of Annie Gibbs Society. She married Dub Pettey in Bremond, Texas in 1953. They were joined in love and matrimony for 52 years until Dub’s death in 2005. Carolyn gave birth to four children. She and Dub raised them in the fear of God and the service of others. During the late 1950s, she and her husband owned and operated the Bremond Press, the Calvert Tribune, and the Franklin Texan. In 1972, she joined the Baylor Press as a proofreader and typesetter in Waco, Texas, while simultaneously operating the Jewett Messenger. After Dub’s passing, she took over operations of the family ranch for several years and she was a church clerk. Carolyn was a tireless, devoted wife and mother who juggled her responsibilities as a working woman and a respected member of the community with a quiet dignity. Carolyn remained a constant presence in the lives of her children until the end, speaking with them on a daily basis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Iris Easley; her sister, Jody Hays; her husband, LD Pettey, Jr.; and her son, Leonard D. Pettey III (Bubba).

She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Parr of Bremond; daughters, Lynne Daniels of Houston (mother of Laura and Allison Daniels), Lisa Williford of Huntsville (wife to Michael Williford, parents of Adam, Eric, Nicholas, and Cole Williford), and Susan Pettey of Bryan; as well as other family and many, many friends.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Jewett City Cemetery, P.O. Box 24, Jewett, Texas 75846.
