Chester Hartford Chandler, III

Tallahassee - Mr. Chester Hartford Chandler III (Chet), 61, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018 after an eight-year battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 26 with funeral services at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 27 in the Osborn Funeral Home Chapel located at 3631 Southern Avenue Shreveport, LA . Graveside prayers will immediately follow at Forest Park Cemetery-East located at 3700 St. Vincent Avenue in Shreveport, LA. Monsignor Earl V. Provenza, V.F. will officiate.

Chet was born on December 23, 1956, the first-born son to Joan Daly Chandler and Chester H. Chandler, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, James Daniel (Danny) Chandler. Chet is survived by his loving wife, Beth, of Tallahassee, FL; cousins, Bill Gary, Gerry and Mary Gary, and Mike and Joyce Gary of Shreveport; and many nieces and nephews.

Chet was reared and educated in Shreveport, LA attending Alexander Elementary School, Hamilton Terrace Junior High School, and Jesuit High School. Among his many talents were his athletic skills. For football at Jesuit High, he was 1-AAA All District-All City Team in 1973 and 1974. For baseball, he was 1-AAA All District in 1973 and 1974 and won the State Championship in 1974.

After being awarded football and baseball scholarships, Chet played on the winning Texas A&M football Southwest Conference Championship team and was invited to play in both the Liberty and Sun Bowls. While he enjoyed football, baseball was his true love and looked forward to every college and professional baseball season.

Chet completed his education and was awarded two Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil & Petroleum Engineering from Texas A & M and a master's degree in Public Administration from Florida State University, graduating with Pi Alpha Alpha honors. Ever the student, he continued to attend classes at the major universities in the various states where he lived.

Chet had a 40-year distinguished career in civil and transportation engineering across both private and public sectors in several states, most recently with the Florida Department of Transportation - Tampa District (FDOT) since 2009. While involved in many ground-breaking technology efforts with FDOT, he established a state-wide Intelligence Transportation System (ITS) chapter, recognized as the premier state chapter in the country. In the early 90's, Chet was instrumental bringing electronic toll collection to Florida and was renowned as "Mr. SunPass".

Chester was a world-traveler with an infectious curiosity for a myriad of different subjects. Everything interested him, be it wildlife, history, astronomy, and all science and technology. An avid photographer, he crafted beautiful pictures of the various vistas he encountered. Chet and his wife, Beth created Lagniappe Vizslas where they owned, trained and handled the Hungarian Vizsla dogs. They widely travelled the world competing in conformation, obedience and field events.

Perhaps Chet's greatest contribution was his love and devotion to his family, particularly Beth, his wife of nearly thirty-five years, and the many friends he made across the country. He offered encouragement and kindness to all who knew or ever encountered him, and he will always be remembered as an esteemed colleague and trusted friend; a true southern gentleman. He will be missed by many and may he rest at peace.

Pallbearers will be cousins, Bill Gary and Mike Gary; nephews, Kirk Sweeney and Christopher Sweeney; and lifelong friends, Frank Cicero Jr. and Steve Doerrer.

In lieu of flowers, please remember the patients of the and all of the wonderful pets in shelters.
