William Carroll Fox
APRIL 26, 1924 – JULY 4, 2018

William Carroll Fox departed this life on Wednesday, the 4th of July 2018. Carroll was born the 26th of April 1924 in Durant, Oklahoma, to Emmons Hodges Fox and Hallie Haley Fox. He was the eldest of three children. The family moved around Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas before settling in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1938.

Carroll graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1942. He entered Texas A & M University that fall and was a member of the Singing Cadets where he performed in the Universal Studios movie “We’ve Never Been Licked.” In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy V-12 Officer Candidate Program at The Rice Institute in Houston, Texas. He was commissioned as an Ensign at the Naval Midshipman School, Columbia University, New York City in 1945. Carroll served as the Cargo, Convoy & Routing Port Director at Naval Operations Base Subic Bay, Luzon, The Philippines. After his tour of duty, he remained in the United States Navy Reserve for 26 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant.

Carroll returned to Texas A & M University in the Fall of 1946 and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, he was employed by Core Laboratories, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. One job brought him to the small town of Hollis, Oklahoma where he met the love of his life, Wilma Lee Breedlove. They were married on Valentine’s Day 1950.

The family resided in Midland and Dallas before coming to Houston in 1964 where they raised their two children. Carroll was a highly respected member of the Houston Petroleum Club, the Houston Geological Society, the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He retired from Core Laboratories after 40 years. Not one to sit still, he worked for several oil services companies as an independent contractor for the next seven years before permanently retiring.

Carroll’s great joy in life was his family. He spent many happy summers as skipper of the “Wilma L” boating on the lakes around Houston. He even learned to water ski at age 45. Carroll and Wilma built their dream lake house, the Foxhole, at Lake Livingston, where they entertained family and friends for many years. Carroll and Wilma Lee spent their retirement years enjoying their grandchildren and cruising the world.

Carroll was preceded in death by Wilma Lee, his wife of 56 years; his parents, Hodges and Hallie Fox; his brother, Enoch Fox; and his sister, Kay Carsten. He is survived by his two children, Karen Harris and her husband, Daniel, of Dallas; and William Carroll Fox, Jr. and his wife, Dorene, of Houston; and by his grandchildren, Monica Fox, and her husband, Luan Do, of Houston; and Garrett Fox, and his wife, Grace Wu, of Houston. Carroll is also survived by his sister-in-law, Bonnie Fox-Miles, of Many, LA; and his two brothers-in-law, Guy Breedlove of Quitman, and Van Breedlove of Silverton, along with many nieces and nephews.

Carroll has been living in Plano, Texas at a wonderful senior memory care facility for the past few years. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at Prestonwood Court and VNA Hospice who have taken care of our father, and us, throughout this difficult journey.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 11th of July, in the drawing room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A private interment will be conducted on Thursday, the 12th of July at the Houston National Cemetery.
