Died: July 7, 2018
Location: San Antonio, Texas

Our heavenly Father called James (Jim) Ray Johnson home the afternoon of Saturday, July 7.

Jim was the second son born to Ruth Craft and Thaddeus Eric Johnson, born at home on March 26, 1929 in Pt. Neches, Jefferson County, TX. His family moved to Corpus Christi where he played football and baseball and was selected to give the student address at graduation from Corpus Christi High School. He had a paper route in junior and senior high school, and he worked in the oil fields during the summers.

After graduating in 1952 with a degree in geology from Texas A&M, where he was a Company Commander and on the Rodeo Team, he received his commission and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Okinawa and Japan before serving in the Texas National Guard.

Jim and his wife of 63 years, Cathryn (Kay) Caskey, married at Christ Episcopal Church in San Antonio. He worked for Hughes Tool Co. and was in the highway and commercial construction business, owning J.R. Johnson Contractor.

Jim was a Master Mason, an Endowed Life Member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, an usher at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, a life member of the National Rifle Association, a descendent of Myles Standish of the Mayflower Society, and his family came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin before 1845.

His hobbies included hunting, shooting, building rifle stocks, reloading ammunition, and flying. He owned three airplanes, one of which he built after he retired, and was actively involved in EAA and the Young Eagles Program.

Survivors include his wife, Cathryn Caskey Johnson; his son James Ray Johnson, Jr. and wife Bernadette of Bartlett, TX; his daughter Karyn Kay Johnson Bartels and husband Robert of Spicewood, TX; his daughter Lizabeth (Libby) Lee Johnson Williams and husband John of San Antonio. His eight grandchildren who called him "Papaw" were James Ray Johnson, III, Robert Hunter Bartels, Kelly Erin Johnson, Kaetlyn Kay Bartels, Madison Elizabeth Wright, Mallory Cathryn Wright, Myles August Bartels and John (Jack) Richard Williams, Jr.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 13th at 12:00 PM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Rev. John Badders, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Luke's, 11 St. Luke's Lane, or to the Corpus Christi Masonic Lodge No. 189, 4114 Weber Rd., Corpus Christi, TX.
