JIMMY DAN ROBERTS


Jimmy Dan Roberts passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2018, while in hospice care after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, June 25, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton TX. A visitation will precede the service at 1:00 pm at the same location. The memorial service will be conducted by Mike Gentry.


Jimmy was born on July 8, 1955, to Upton Knight Roberts and Emile Caillier in Orange TX. On November 12, 1982, Jimmy married Wanda Lou Williams in Austin TX. They resided in Temple for nearly 30 years.


Survivors include his wife Wanda, sister Deborah Ashcraft and her husband Don of New Braunfels TX, sister Linda Mathews and her husband Stan of Orange TX, brother Ronald Roberts and his wife Jane of Orange TX, and brother Randall Roberts of Bridge City TX, along with numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws, friends and colleagues.


Jimmy attended Bridge City ISD schools and graduated from high school in 1973. He then attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles LA, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with specialties in Social Studies and Math. From 1981—1984, Jimmy studied architectural history and American Civilization at the University of Texas in Austin. He received his Master of Education from Texas A&M University, College Station, in Curriculum and Instruction in 1988. Jimmy later received his Doctorate of Education (EdD) from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, Belton, in 2010 as part of the first cohort of students in Higher Education Leadership.


Jimmy taught social studies and math in public schools in Morgan City LA, Bridge City TX, and in Bremond TX. In 1992, Jimmy transitioned to higher education at Temple College, where he worked in the Tech Prep program and as an Institutional Researcher. His last position at Temple College was as Associate Vice-President of Community Initiatives and Special Programs. He retired in January 2018.


Jimmy was a talented musician, both instrumentally and vocally. He played trumpet and French horn in high school and college, as well as with community bands and orchestras in Bridge City, Austin, Bryan, and Belton. He sang tenor with community choruses in Bryan and Belton.


Jimmy was a faithful Christian, a member of the Leon Valley church of Christ in Temple, where he used his talents as a Bible Class teacher and congregational song leader.

Donations in honor of Jimmy Roberts may be made to Temple Literacy Council or to Temple Symphony Orchestra.
