Warren C. "Dusty" Schulze

Warren Clarence “Dusty” Schulze, Lt. Colonel, US Army (Ret) passed away June 25, 2018.
He was born February 26, 1921 on his family’s ranch in Mason, Texas to the late Hugo O. and Hulda Eckert Schulze. He attended Mason County schools and graduated from Texas A&M in 1942. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the US Army. After training as an armored officer, he was assigned to Fort Gordon.
It was here that he met the love of his life for the next 74 years, Delray Granger Schulze. Shortly after their marriage, he was sent to France where he joined the Third Army as a company commander, 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, in the 10th Armored Division. Shortly before Christmas 1944, his unit was assigned to Combat Command B of the 10th and the unit was sent to Bastogne where a day later elements of the 101st Airborne joined them in the city’s defense.
Dusty was awarded numerous decorations for his valor at the Battle of the Bulge and for his valor in Germany. He received three Bronze Stars, two for valor, the Belgium Croix de Guerre Medal with Palm, the Belgium Fourragere, Presidential Unit Citation for combat action in Bastogne during the battle of the Bulge and the Combat Infantry Badge in additional to other WWII medals. During the occupation of Europe he served on the executive staff of then Colonel William C. Westmoreland. He completed service to his country in the US Army Reserves from which he retired in 1969. For his service to his country he was selected for the Greenwood County Hall of Heroes in 2013.
He was active in the 10th Armored Division Association and was an officer in the organization. On the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, he was invited by the US Senate Armed Forces Committee to address the celebration of the battle in Brussels at NATO Headquarters. Dusty was also a member of the American legion, the Veterans Foreign Wars and the Star Fort Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Dusty and three partners purchased a very small accounting firm, Elliott Davis, in 1959 and started a growth path for this small firm that led to the firm mow being one of the forty largest CPA firms in the nation. He remained active with the firm even after retirement including writing a history of the firm. He was the managing partner of the Greenwood Office for over thirty years. Dusty was a member of the SC Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.
He was a financial advisor to many Greenwood businesses, even dating back to 1947 when he joined Elliott Davis in Greenville after WWII. While he was proud of his client relationships, he was particularly proud of being instrumental in assisting VELUX in their decision to locate their first US manufacturing facility in Greenwood and in being a close advisor to its management for many years.
Dusty was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. He served on numerous boards of local non-profits over the years and was recognized by his community for many of his local and national endeavors. He was selected as the Small Business Person of the Year and was elected to the Greenwood County Hall of Fame. Dusty served for fifteen years on the Board of Trustees of Self Memorial Hospital. He was also a former member of the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank Board.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Charles W. (Sarah Alice), two daughters, Constance Schulze (Neil) and Lisa Smith (Jeff), six grandchildren, Margaret and Caroline Schulze, Will Richter and Katherine Jenkins, and Granger Smith and Mary Lyle Cathcart along with four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services with full military honors will be conducted at 2PM Thursday in the Oakbrook Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum with Rev. James McCoy-Bruce officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following at the Oakbrook Family Center in celebration of a wonderful life.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the 10th Armored Division Scholarship at the Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or the Main Street United Methodist Church Foundation, 211 N. Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646.
