James Harold Mercer
1952 - 2018

James Harold Mercer, 65, was born in Houston, Texas on September 23, 1952 to Harold and Lee Mercer and died in Cypress, Texas on June 17, 2018 with his family by his side.
Jimmy was a graduate of Cy-Fair High School and Texas A&M University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Following in the footsteps of his father, Jim was a professional engineer, and he recently retired from his business of 23 years, J.H. Mercer Engineers. He was highly creative, smart, athletic, kind, patient, and always had a sense of humor. Jim could create and build just about anything he could imagine. He recently moved to Cypress from his long-time home in Northwest Houston where he spent many years customizing his garage and yard. In the 3 short months he lived in Cypress, Jimmy built shelves out of scrap wood, decorated the lawn, and left his “Mercer” touch on it. He knew that he didn’t have much time left when he moved to Cypress, but he was doing as much as he could to leave the home nice for Charla. Jimmy could never leave his vehicle stock. He loved Chevys, especially big blocks. He always had to enhance and “perfect” them with headers, duals, and fuel modifications. Camping, boating, hunting, fishing, and surfing were his favorite pastimes. He never went to any body of water without a surfboard because he had to have it “just in case.” His family and friends were everything to him. Jimmy was loyal, he was friendly, he would find a way to make a person smile, and he was always willing to help anyone in need.
Jim is survived by Charla, his wife of 43 years, his daughter Jennifer Kelley, son-in-law Blake Kelley, and his grandchildren Jack and Kendall Kelley. He is also survived by his twin brother Jerry Mercer (Suzanne), brother Gregg Mercer, and sister Pat Butterfras (Larry), along with numerous nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends and colleagues.
This year, Jimmy was able to spend Father’s Day with all 3 of his kids, as he was joyously greeted in Heaven that evening by 2 of his children, Austin and Melissa, whom he missed dearly. He was also received in Heaven by his loving parents, sister and brother-in-law Karen and Don Ware, and father and mother-in-law Charles and Lavada Pennington.
Pallbearers are Fredy Alvarenga, Larry Butterfras, Heath Green, J.M. Green, Blake Kelley, and Jacob Ware. Honorary Pallbearers are Jerry Mercer and Gregg Mercer.
All services will be on Thursday, June 21,, 2018. Visitation at 10:00 AM. Funeral will begin at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow immediately after the service in the Rosewood Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Texas EquuSearch, P.O. Box 395, Dickinson, Texas 77539.
