James “Mike” Michael McKelvey

James Michael “Mike” McKelvey, (Major, US Army), 75, of McAlester, died May 4, 2018 at his residence.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Krebs with Rev. Kingsley George-Obilonu as celebrant. Innichment will follow at All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester. Military honors will be provided
by the U.S. Army Honors Team.
Honorary pallbearers will be Matt McKelvey, Michael Weatherly, Paul Weatherly, Mark Weatherly, Rusty Statham, David Statham, L.B. Snider, John David Snider, and Robert Snider.
Mike was born to Robert O. and Ida Vivian (Leach) McKelvey on September 20, 1942 in Electra, Texas. He graduated from Electra High School in 1961. He obtained a Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1965 and a Master’s of Science degree in 1966 from Midwestern State
University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He completed post graduate work at Texas A & M and North Texas State University.
Mike married Scherry Larue Snider on August 29, 1964 in Childress, Texas.
He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, and was stationed in Thailand. He continued his military career with the Texas National Guard. He went back on active duty in 1979 to attend the Command and General Staff Course. Mike was promoted to the rank of Major.
He worked as an educator teaching science, computer science, and coaching in Vernon, Bryan, Childress, and Windthorst, Texas. He completed his career as a counselor for the Windham School system.
Mike was an avid fisherman and Texas A & M football fan. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Krebs.
He is survived by his wife: Scherry McKelvey of the home; sons: Sean McKelvey and wife, Leigh Ann of McAlester, Casey McKelvey and wife, Lisa of Grand Prairie, Texas; grandchildren: Jessica, Brayden, Kamden, Michael, Noah, and Jadyn; great-grandchild: Kaycee;
brother: Patrick McKelvey and wife, Debbie of Hobbs, New Mexico; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents: Robert McKelvey and Vivian McKelvey.
