Marvin H. Hinds
1928 - 2018

Dr. Marvin H. Hinds, 89, Marion, now joins his beloved wife, Hazel, and has received his reward of eternity in Heaven. He went to be with his Lord and Savior at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Colonial Oaks Health Care Center. Marvin was born in Franklin County, Indiana, on October 25, 1928, and was the son of the late Charles E. and Maude (Hammer) Hinds. He married Hazel Lavera Rush, who went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2018.

Marvin was a Staff Sergeant with the United States Air Force and was awarded the National Defense Service and Good Conduct medals. He graduated from Marion College, Valpo Tech Institute, and Texas A&M, where he conducted research in Physiology and earned his Ph.D. degree. In 1995, Marvin retired from Indiana Wesleyan University after 23 years of service. He had reached the title of Professor Emeritus and was the Biology Department Coordinator. Even into his retirement, he continued to teach classes at IWU. Prior to his service at IWU, he taught at Baylor College of Medicine and at M.D. Anderson, both of which are located in Houston. Additionally, as a bio-engineer, he researched at Purdue University for 15 summers, and he helped design defibrillators and patent a medical device. In his community, Marvin served as Past President of the Indiana Chapter of the American Scientific Affiliation.

Marvin’s service also extended to his home church at College Wesleyan, of which he was a member and where he was the Senior Director of Best Years Fellowship. He loved his church family and he loved his Lord, whom he served faithfully.

In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, helping his family with home improvement projects, and attending IWU athletic events. Marvin loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an intelligent man, yet a humble and devoted man who impacted many people over the course of his life. What a life well-lived and well-loved by many!

He is survived by son, David Charles (Karen) Hinds, Marion; daughter, Kay Linn (Jeff) Alter, Marion; sister-in-law, Ruth Hinds; four grandchildren, David Douglas Hinds, Charlotte, North Carolina, Jamie Linn (Johnny) Walker, Gas City, Jeffrey Frank (Priscilla) Alter, Marion, and Christina Marie (David) Tyler, Marion; great-grandchildren, Ofelia, Noble, Judah, and twins Eva and Ella; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents and loving wife, he was preceded in death by twin brother, Melvin, and brother, Lowell Hinds.

The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at College Wesleyan Church, 200 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.

Services to celebrate Marvin’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018, at College Wesleyan Church with additional visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.

Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Dr. Marvin Hinds Pre-Med Scholarship at Indiana Wesleyan University, 4201 S. Washington St., Marion, IN 46953.
