Richard E. Cowart Jr., PhD
May 09, 1949 - June 05, 2018

Richard E. Cowart Jr., PhD, 69, of Dubuque, IA, and formerly of Texas, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at home, of a heart attack.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Blades Chapel, University of Dubuque, Dubuque, IA, with Pastor Mark Cowart officiating. Friends may greet the family from 9 a.m. until the service on Saturday, June 9 in the Blades Chapel Atrium at University of Dubuque. Following the service, there will be a short reception in the Blades Chapel Atrium. Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is entrusted with arrangements.

Richard was born May 9, 1949 in Dallas, TX, the son of Richard Sr. and Bernice (Becker) Cowart. He graduated from Plainview High School, and continued his education, earning his BS in Biology from West Texas State, his MS in Microbiology from Texas A&M, and his PhD in Microbiology from Texas A&M. Richard was a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Dubuque for 20 years, where he cared greatly about higher learning/education. He was always willing to give his students extra help when they asked.

His passion was his work but his call was to honor our Lord through microbiology research. Richard was always steadfast and faithful in his personal walk with Jesus. He believed that there was life after death only through Jesus Christ. He spent long hours studying the Word of God, and always knew where to find a scripture in the Bible. We rest in the fact that we know he is celebrating in the glory of God in Heaven as is promised in the Bible.

He married Robin Benton on August 8, 1998 in Dubuque, and together they raised two children, Alexander and Olivia. Among Richard’s many interests were playing his trumpets, flying airplanes, cars (especially his 1989 Mercedes), science, guns, and cooking. Richard could always be counted on to have the answers based on his vast knowledge collected over the years.

Richard is survived by his wife, Robin, of Dubuque; two children, Alexander Link and Olivia Cowart, both of Dubuque; his brother, Pastor Mark (Linda) Cowart of Colorado Springs, CO; his sister, Shirley Callaway of Grand Junction, CO; his nieces and nephews, David, Stephen, Wesley, Heather, and Kristen, along with their families; his aunts and all of his extended family in Texas; many close friends who shared his diverse interests; and his loving pets, Cooper the dog and Tuna the cat.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
