Rufus Rogers Lyne
August 4, 1942 - May 12, 2018

Rufus Rogers Lyne was born August 4, 1942 in San Antonio, Texas, to John Thomas and Annie Ruth Lyne. He graduated from George West High School in 1960. He married Susie LaVanche Holt in 1966.

He passed away May 12, 2018.

Rufus went to Texas A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business. He played varsity baseball for the Aggies after being recruited as one of the finest pitchers in South Texas according to Coach Tom Chandler. Upon graduation, Rufus was commissioned into the U.S. Army and finished his career with the rank of captain.

Rufus worked for Baroid off-shore in Alvin, Texas. In 1973, the family moved to Beeville, Texas and Rufus worked for SBA.

Upon returning to George West with his family, Rufus and his partners started Southern Lease Service. Rufus continued his 42-year career with Forney Oil & Gas and McCombs Energy, retiring in 2016.

Rufus may be best known for his kindness, jovial spirit and larger than life personality. Family was the center of Rufus’ universe, and he was never happier than when he was with his family. Upon retirement, you could find Rufus enjoying time with his beloved grandchildren at their various sporting events. And whenever the chance arose, he loved spending time behind his favorite Triple Diamond slot machine. His easy smile, good advice and fun-loving personality will be greatly missed by all.

Rufus was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Ruth; and his father, John Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susie; son John Lyne, and wife, Crystal Lyne; daughter Sunny Lyne Ackerman and husband, John; and grandchildren, Ashley and Blayne Lyne.

He is also survived by his brother, Monty Lyne and wife, Mary Kay; his sister, Sal Lyne McSpadden and husband, Tom; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be lovingly missed by his favorite dogs, Joey and Gus.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at First United Methodist Church in George West, Texas.

Those who wish may make donations to First United Methodist Church.
