Johnny Allen Spannagel
September 5, 1933 - June 1, 2018

Johnny Allen Spannagel passed away June 1, 2018 after a lengthy illness.

Johnny was born on September 5, 1933 at home in Randlett, Oklahoma to Robbie Minnie Crow and Russell Edison Spannagel. He was the sixth child of eight.

Johnny grew up in Lytle a small town just southwest of San Antonio. Johnny was active in school and quarterback on the football team. At Lytle High School he met his childhood sweetheart Mary. Mary and Johnny married while he was attending Texas A&M studying Petroleum Engineering and they had their first child Pam while still in school. After Graduate school they lived in multiple locations in Southern Mississippi and Northern Louisiana until finally settling in New Orleans. In 1974, they relocated to College Station where they lived for 34 years. They moved to Plano in 2007.

Johnny began his petroleum engineering career with Chevron before moving into the consulting field. He drilled wells throughout the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas area along with overseas in the United Arab Emirates and Holland. He finished his career with Cliff’s Drilling in Houston.

In his retirement years, Johnny continued an active lifestyle traveling with Mary and his children. Johnny and Mary also bought a fishing camp in Rockport where Johnny spent many days fishing and sharing his love of fishing with others. Johnny was also active in the Plano community volunteering at Medical Center of Plano and Brother Bill’s Helping Hand in West Dallas

Johnny is survived by his daughter Pam (Norman) of Plano and son Dean (Pam) of Conroe. He is also survived by his grandchildren Robert (Erika) and Katye (Robert Black) Spannagel of Spring, and Taylor and Turner Thompson of Plano; his great-granddaughter Olivia of Spring; his sister Phyllis Sandlin of Dripping Springs and brothers Kenneth of Lytle and Patrick of San Antonio. And several nieces and nephews.

Johnny was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Mary Helen Turner Spannagel, his parents Robbie Minnie Crow and Russell Edison Spannagel Sr.; Sister Edna Mae Fowler and brothers Lawrence E., Russell, and Bill.

The funeral will be at 10AM Friday, June 8, 2018 (viewing at 9AM) at: Hurley Funeral Home, 14822 Main St., Lytle, TX 78052 with Johnny’s brother Patrick presiding. Burial will be immediately after the funeral at the Lytle Community Cemetery.
