Leslie E. "Les" Brandes
March 07, 1920 - May 16, 2018

Leslie E. "Les" Brandes passed away May 16, 2018, in New Braunfels, Texas. He was born in Weimar, Texas March 7, 1920 to Paul and Ella Hasse Brandes.

He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. Upon his return, he met and married Douglas (Doug) Carter of Westhoff, Texas on August 10, 1946.

Les served as Assistant County Agricultural Extension Agent from 1946 to 1950 in Nueces County and County Agricultural Extension Agent in Jim Wells County from 1950 to 1975. After his retirement, he worked for B.K. Johnson, owner of Chaparrosa Ranch in La Pryor, Texas and the Tomas Ranch in Freer, Texas. Until 2009, he maintained a small herd of mixed breed cattle on his ranchette in Alice, Texas known as B4, which become a popular meeting place for many of his friends and family.

Les was an international livestock judge and from 1957 to 1984 he judged major livestock shows in Texas, as well as South Africa, Venezuela and Columbia.

Les was preceded in death by his wife, Douglas, his parents, Paul and Ella Brandes, and his sisters, Irma Dahse, Velma Garbade and Ellyn Collier.

Survivors include his son, Richard and Wife, Lynda, of New Braunfels, son, Russell, of Sugar Land, two grandchildren, Josh Holden and Jessica Paige Rollins, of New Braunfels, one brother, Paul, of Austin and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the First Methodist Church in Nixon, Texas with Pastor Rhonda Troll officiating. Burial will be at the Westhoff Cemetery in Westhoff, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Endowment Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Alice, 111 N. Adams, Alice, Texas 78332.
