Rufus "Chubby" Lewis, Jr.
December 03, 1940 - May 14, 2018
Rufus Benjamin Lewis, Jr., 77, of Cypress, formerly of Somerville, went to his heavenly home on Monday, May 14.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 17, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Services will be Friday, May 18, 10 am at the First Baptist Church in Somerville, with interment to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Rufus, lovingly known from birth as “Chubby”, enjoyed telling stories, making people laugh, and bringing pleasure to everyone he met. He was a collector of many things including guns and knives, western artifacts, and an eclectic treasure of art. Spending time with his sons and friends playing golf and hunting and watching Texas A&M sports were some of his favorite things. But above all of this, he was a simple family man who loved his kids and grandchildren. Chubby’s personality could light up a room even when he wasn’t feeling his best. His personality and wit remained with him until the end of his earthly life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Benjamin Lewis, Sr. and Lillian Novosad Lewis and brother, Kenneth Lewis.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory two sons, Scott Lewis and wife Cindy of Allen, Texas, Ted Lewis of Houston, Texas; brother, Gordon Lewis and wife Carol of Nacogdoches, Texas; sister-in-law, Joyce Lewis of Brenham, Texas; grandchildren, Allison Lewis, Emily Lewis and Branden Lewis, along with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Pallbearers are Mark Nixon, Jeff Lummus, Branden Lewis, Hugh Lewis, Clay Lewis and Jeff Townlin.
Honorary Pallbearers are Mike Rhodes, Bud Lovell, Fred Kettrick, Billy Barnett, Fred Lykes and Dale Meyer.
