Anna Wegener
November 25, 1998 - May 12, 2018
Anna Dryden Wegener, a 19 year-old Texas A&M freshman, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018, in a car accident as she traveled to Colorado to serve as a Young Life summer camp counselor. Anna was a joy and a light to everyone who met her. Her absence in our lives will be felt forever.
Anna, named for her great-grandmother and her grandmother with whom she shared a birthday, was born November 25, 1998 in College Station, Texas. She was beautiful and loving. Anna grew up playing with her younger siblings: Amelia, Allen and Isabella. She enjoyed cousin camp, hunting with her father, playing competitive soccer and attending Aggie games. Though the family moved to Tyler, Texas, she always planned to be an Aggie like her mom, uncle, cousin, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Anna graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler, where she excelled in many academic, social, and athletic endeavors. Anna was hard-working, determined and motivated. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Hispanic Honor Society. During her senior year, Anna acted in the senior play, High School Musical. She was also a star soccer player and was selected as her team’s chaplain. As a senior, Anna was sidelined with an ACL injury. Rather than show her disappointment, Anna continued to be the Lady Raider’s greatest encourager. As a result, she was chosen as the “Best Team Player” by her coaches and teammates.
Anna radiated joy. She desired for those around her to experience happiness always and made it her goal to break uncomfortable silences with crazy, silly questions. Anna hosted many fun-filled gatherings and parties at the family lake house, spending hours with her friends playing board and card games. Ever the entertainer, Anna performed skits, rapped, and danced. Due to her signature dance move, she earned the title of the “whip queen”.
Once, Anna threw a talent show party with Amelia as the emcee. She appointed Isabella and Allen judges and, of course, Anna won first place with an awesome rendition of Alphabet Aerobics. Allen and Isabella fondly remember binge-watching an entire season of Survivor and getting Icees with Anna.
Anna was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. As chaplain, she served as the prayer leader for her soccer team. Anna was actively involved in Young Life, where she was a leader for middle school students, a work crew leader and a summer camp counselor. She was recently selected as a college leader for a College StationYoung Life high school group. Anna was passionate about sharing her love for Jesus and she brought all those around her closer to the Lord. It was Anna’s goal to read the Bible cover to cover.
Thoughtful and intentional, Anna wrote personal letters with specific Bible verses to each of her senior friends sharing verses that described them and expressing her love for them. Anna was selfless. At Young Life Wilderness Camp, she volunteered to sleep on the edge of the pavilion to prevent others from having to. However, Anna did wake up down the hill in the wet grass.
Anna recently completed her freshman year at Texas A&M University, making many new friends as an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She enjoyed getting coffee and watching sunsets with her sorority sisters. Anna was so looking forward to next year and having her younger sister Amelia at A&M with her.
Anna is survived by her parents, Drs. Allen and Kim Wegener; siblings, Amelia, Isabella and Allen; grandmother, Anna Eakin; uncles and aunts Ed Eakin, Curtis and Pat Wegener, Kathryn Ross, Eric and Connie Wegener, Blake and Dora Wegener; and many other loving family members.
As one friend said, “It’s impossible to count how many lives were touched by you, Anna. Our job now is to continue to spread the light that you so effortlessly did. You were a friend to anyone who crossed your path. Your presence instantly lit up any room you walked into. It may have been a short life, but it was nothing short of an epic life you lived. God knew you better than any of us and He knew you were ready. He knew something so beautiful here on Earth could only make an even better angel.”
Rosary will be Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home in Tyler. Funeral services will be at St. Mary Magdalene Church at 18221 FM 2493, Flint, Texas on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.
