James Clarence Harless
APRIL 25, 1938 – MAY 10, 2018

Jim Harless was born on April 25th, 1938, to Gerie and J.W. Harless. He grew up surrounded by a large loving family that included his parents, a sister, his grandparents, and lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He graduated from Hearne High School (valedictorian of his class) in 1956 and earned bachelor and master degrees in electrical engineering at Texas A&M University. During his career as an electrical engineer, he was employed by General Electric Company, Southwest Research Institute, R. B. Butler Construction Company, the City of Hearne, and Texas A&M University.

Jim had three great loves--his wife and family, Aggie football, and golf. He discovered Aggie football when he was a young boy, and from that time on, he was one of the Aggies' most devoted fans. He loved listening to Aggie football games on the radio or watching the Aggies play on television. He was also an avid golfer and spent many happy hours on the golf course. And he adored his wife Pat, his devoted companion, along with their daughter Laurie, their grandchildren Laura Lea, Beau and Damian as well as his own family.

What made Jimmy special was that it was impossible not to love him. He was lovable from the very beginning and throughout his life. His mother thought he was the prettiest baby she had ever seen, and she adored him from the day he was born. He was a sweet child. He was a Boy Scout. He helped around his parents' neighborhood grocery store. He was a favorite among his young playmates--his cousins and his friends--as well as his grandparents, his aunts and uncles, because he was so bright and always so pleasant to be around.

WithJim’s passing on Thursday, several family members felt compelled to comment, and their heartfelt comments describe the beautiful soul that he was:

"Jimmy was very special to me. When we were kids, he looked after me. He was a little older than me, and he took me fishing, and he read stories to me."

"Everyone knew that Jimmy was brilliant, but he was also thoughtful, kind, funny, and loyal. He was a special person." "My heart is broken. He was my hero."

"My Dad was a brilliant, yet humble man. He never bragged of the important work he did but I assure his memory will forever live on at Texas A&M University. He taught me the game of golf and shared his great appreciation for college football. He said, "each of one these sports is played from, and only from, the heart." The love of golf and college football has been passed down to my children and will no doubt live on in our family throughout the generations. Master's week and watching Aggie football will never be the same without him."

" Paw Paw was a man of few words but a man of wise words. He was the most brilliant man I ever knew and his heart was made of pure gold. He loved us grandkids more the life itself. I feel so blessed to have been able to call him my Grandfather." LLS

"My grandfather was an awesome individual. He was good hearted, humorous and a role model for our family. He always took time to ask what was going on in my life and how I was doing but mostly, how I was hitting the golf ball. I will miss him more than words can say." BMM

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Calvin Eugene Woods.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Harless; daughter, Laurie Lastor Brown; grandchildren, Laura Lea Smith and husband Luke, Beau Michael Moore, Damion Montano Garcia and fiancé Chelsea Arant; sister, Sharon Harless Woods; nephew, Jason Glen Hall and wife Susan; niece, Tara Hall Engler and husband Peter; and numerous cousins and great-nieces.

Jim will be remembered by all who knew him as intelligent, soft-spoken, good-natured, and always lovable.
