John A. Blasienz
APRIL 5, 1925 ~ MAY 8, 2018 (AGE 93)

John Albert Blasienz, 93, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 8, 2018, with his family by his side. He was born in Bryan, Texas on April 5, 1925. His parents were John A. Blasienz and Corrine (Thompson) Blasienz. John was raised in Bryan, attending Bowie Elementary, Lamar Jr. High and Stephen F. Austin High school. He was the Bryan Bronco quarterback in the fall of 1942.


John began classes at Texas A&M in January of 1943, but left to join the Navy in June. John was a member of the 105th Seabees (U.S. Naval Construction Battalion) and served in Virginia, California, New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands of Leyte and Samar. He returned to Texas A&M in February of 1946, graduating in January of 1950. In 1948, John was a member of the Aggie baseball team, being selected as a “12th Man” member.


In 950, John went to work in Brenham for TxDot, known then as the Texas Highway Department. In November of 1951 John married Madeline Weiss and became a Lutheran and member of the Salem Lutheran Church, near Brenham. While at Salem, John taught a youth Sunday school class, served on the Church Council as Treasurer, and participated with the men’s Brotherhood. In Brenham, John was involved in numerous highway projects and was a designer of the U.S 290 bypass. He also played baseball with the Brenham Lions semipro team.
In 1958, John moved to Bryan and was promoted to the position of District Construction Engineer. He participated in all of the projects of the 10 County District 17. These included building Interstate 45 through Walker, Madison, Leon, and Freestone Counties, SH 6 around Bryan, and College Station. John served on the Bryan Planning and Zoning Commission, local and state Texas Public Employees Association Officer, and was president of the THD District 17 Credit Union for many years.


John and Madeline became members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in 1959. John served as a Sunday school teacher, was council and Congregational President numerous times, was Treasurer, and Secretary. He served on the Southern District Stewardship Committee of the American Lutheran Church. When Our Savior’s Lutheran considered moving from the North gate area, John chaired the Planning Committee, then the Architectural Committee, and finally the Building Committee for the structure Our Savior’s now occupies on Woodcreek Drive. He has chaired the Property Committee and served as the Usher Coordinator.


He was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ervin and Ruth Stern, Leonard and Jo Addicks, Dorothy Weiss, Louis W. Weiss, Luther Weiss, and his nephew James Stern.


Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Madeline Weiss Blasienz, son David Blasienz and wife Lorie, and daughter Sara Beth Williams. Grandchildren Andrew Blasienz, Reed Williams, Melissa Williams, Matthew Burns and wife Ashley, Misty Burns, and great-grandchild Carson Burns. Brother-in-law Clemence Weiss and sisters-in-law Doris Weiss and Verbie Weiss of Brenham, Texas. Inez Weiss of Georgetown and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.


Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2018, at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan.


Graveside service for the family will be at 9:30am on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Bryan City Cemetery. Services will be held at 11 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at 1001 Woodcreek Drive College Station, Texas 77845.


In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Brazos Valley Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
