Billy G. Johnson
Billy G. Johnson, age 82, passed away at his Bowie home on April 7, 2018. He and his wife Anita returned back to Maryland three years ago, after having lived in Conway, Arkansas for 20 years following his retirement. Billy was born June 30, 1935 in San Saba, Texas to the late Marvin and Ora Johnson. Growing up, his family moved frequently across Texas, until he graduated from high school. Billy attended Tarleton State Junior College, before earning a doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University, while interning with the federal government. In 1959, Billy began his career with the U.S. Agricultural Research Service as a field veterinarian in Hot Springs, Arkansas. In 1960, he was deployed overseas as a captain in the United States Air Force. In 1962, Billy married the love of his life, Anita Lester. He and his family lived in several states prior to settling in Maryland. Billy culminated his fruitful USDA career by serving in the Senior Executive Service as Deputy Administrator for Veterinary Services for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. After his 1994 retirement, he worked periodically as a consultant. Billy's interests included: golfing, fishing, playing in a dinner bridge group, and tending to his well-manicured yard. Likewise, he was actively involved with his community and church. Volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and serving as a local chapter president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association were among his pursuits. Billy was predeceased by his parents Marvin and Ora Johnson, a sister Betty Jo Helbig, an adult son Chris Johnson, and several brothers-and sisters-in-law. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anita L. Johnson, daughter Diane Dolinka, son-in-law John, three grandchildren (Matthew, Ruthann and Rachel), and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on April 19 at Saint Matthew's United Methodist Church in Bowie, and was well attended by his family, friends and former USDA colleagues. Billy was dearly loved, loyal and compassionate, and always there for his family. He is greatly missed.
