Sweeney Jamison Doehring, III
1960-2018
Sweeney Jamison Doehring, III passed away peacefully on April 13, 2018 at St. Luke's hospital following complications from open heart surgery. He was born on March 24, 1960 in Houston, TX to Sweeney Jamison Doehring, Jr. and Sally Walston Doehring. He was a fourth generation Houstonian and attended Robert E. Lee High School. He was a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of '82, and earned a BBA in Management. He spent 20 years at HL&P/CenterPoint Energy helping manage customer electric service. Over the last 15 years, J. worked as a Vice President at several companies in the utility services contractor industry.
J.'s passions included Aggie sports, especially football. From following the next up and coming recruit to noticing the third string walk on from a small town you were pretty sure was still in Texas, J. relished his Saturday afternoons at Kyle Field. His fellow season ticket holders were welcome to his expertise, and of course, complimentary laminated depth charts. Beyond the grid iron, J. traveled often with family and friends to Disney World, enjoying especially the annual Food and Wine Festival. J.'s passion also extended to his church family, Holy Covenant UMC, where he was an active member for over 29 years. He is especially remembered for his leadership with youth and annual mission trips to Mountain T.O.P. Ministry in Tennessee.
J. was a man of exemplary character, who valued relationships and family above all else, a good listener who genuinely sought to help when a need was heard, who found great joy with his grandson, and who only seemed to increase his love for his wife, Marla, who he began courting all the way back in high school.
J., lovingly known as "J. Doehring," "J Dot," and "Papa G" is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marla Ackermann Doehring; his two children, Rev. Sweeney "Jamison" Doehring, IV (Katherine) and Sarah Ackermann Doehring; and grandson, Henry Jamison Doehring. He is also survived by his mother, his sister Cindy Doehring Kellum (John), his brother Lee Etter Doehring (Shelby), and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father. A celebration of life service is scheduled for Saturday, April 21st at 11:00 am at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. The Reverend Fred Willis and The Reverend Jamison Doehring will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Sweeney J. Doehring III '82 Memorial Fund at The Association of Former Students.
