Larry Wayne Laursen – March 9, 2018

Larry Wayne Laursen, 74, passed away at home on March 9, 2018. Larry donated his body to Texas Tech University Medical Center in Lubbock.

No services are planned however, the family is extending an invitation to our friends for an open house at our home on Georgia St., Saturday March 17, 2018 from 2-4 pm to pay their respects.

Larry was born in Woodward, OK, December 24, 1943, his dad was in the service so grandpa drove his mother to the hospital in an old pickup truck with a hole in the floorboard, it was very cold according to DeVerle his mother.

When Larry’s dad Earl came home from the service in 1946 the family moved back to Amarillo. Earl and his dad built a small house on the side of their lot on Georgia St. in which they lived until their new home was completed in 1951.

Larry attended school at Bivins Elementary, Austin Jr. High, Tascosa High, Amarillo College and then completed his education at Texas A&M at College Station receiving a degree in civil engineering, which he used for the next forty years, starting in Kansas, followed by Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and retiring from the City of Rockford in Illinois in 2007. It was a very good life.

Larry met his wife Carolyn Cress Desbien in 1968 in Goodland, KS, they were married August 30, 1969 at his parents’ home on Georgia St. in Amarillo. To this union was born a son Larry Wade, Larry also helped raise Carolyn’s children Richard Desbien, Jr. and Lisa Renee’ Desbien.

Larry and Carolyn returned to the family home in Amarillo in 2007 to help care for his mother who was 95, he felt you never get too old to go home, it was the right thing to do and the timing was perfect.

Larry was a slow talking and walking Texan, if he was picked on about this, he liked to say, I have two speeds and you wouldn’t like the other one either. A friend once said of Larry, he is one of the good guys. Agreed! Larry was my rock, my assurance that everything would be okay. He loved to travel, play games of almost any kind, he particularly liked Texas Hold’em, Bingo and Casino play.

Survivors are his wife Carolyn of the home and children Larry Wade and Melissa of Austin, Dr. Lisa R. Altmann and Charles of Broussard, LA and Richard L. Desbien, Jr. of Rockford, IL, grandchildren Lucas Shelby and Emily Elizabeth Laursen of Austin and Alex Matthew and Samuel Charles Altmann of Broussard, LA, brother-in-law Fred Cress and Karen of Liberal, KS, sister-in-law Margaret Baalman of Goodland, KS, as well as many other extended family members, also lifelong friends Dennis and Mary Reynolds, Danny Black, and special old friends Creola Nebhut and Betty Duniven, all of Amarillo, and last but certainly not least, our sweet, happy little dog “Joey” will miss his sleeping buddy.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Earl and DeVerle and a brother Shelby Lynn Laursen.

The family suggests any donations be made to the Alzheimer Association.

We would also like to thank the staff of Encompass Hospice for their help and care, especially Shelly, Krista, and Emily.
